Using Tape on Multi-Part Items The document provides instructions for using tape to attach multiple items such as a book and DVD case. The items are lined up with flush bottoms and spines and taped on the outside spine. Tape is then applied to the inside of the hinge to avoid exposed sticky parts. This allows the items to be attached as one piece and sit nicely on the shelf while still allowing the case to be replaced if damaged.

Intro: Cedar Treasure Chest
This is a simple project that can be completed in an afternoon. Tools that I used are as follows ( not all are necessary, use what you have available!):
- chisels and mallet
- drill press
- table saw
- sand paper
- wood glue and tack nails
- router ( I did not have one but this tool is a great asset)
- treasure and lots of it to fill your chest
- trust worthy treasure guardian
Step 1: Ripping the lid and marking the template
To start this project off, I first ripped a 1/2" inch off my 4x4 piece of cedar using the table saw. This will act as my lid. I also marked a square in the center of my soon to
be box where I will begin hollowing. I measured 1 inch in from the ends and a 1/2 inch in on the sides to give me a nice sized template for where the box will be drilled
out.
Step 2: Hollowing the box out
Next we are going to use the drill press and a 1 1/2" forsner bit to hollow out the inside of the block. Make sure you set the drill press to drill to a consistent depth,
I chose a 1-inch depth from the bottom. Try doing all 4 corners first and then work your way into the middle of the block.

Cedar treasure chest
Intro: Cedar Treasure Chest
This is a simple project that can be completed in an afternoon. Tools that I used are as follows ( not all are necessary, use what you have available!):
- chisels and mallet
- drill press
- table saw
- sand paper
- wood glue and tack nails
- router ( I did not have one but this tool is a great asset)
- treasure and lots of it to fill your chest
- trust worthy treasure guardian
Step 1: Ripping the lid and marking the template
To start this project off, I first ripped a 1/2" inch off my 4x4 piece of cedar using the table saw. This will act as my lid. I also marked a square in the center of my soon to
be box where I will begin hollowing. I measured 1 inch in from the ends and a 1/2 inch in on the sides to give me a nice sized template for where the box will be drilled
out.
Step 2: Hollowing the box out
Next we are going to use the drill press and a 1 1/2" forsner bit to hollow out the inside of the block. Make sure you set the drill press to drill to a consistent depth,
I chose a 1-inch depth from the bottom. Try doing all 4 corners first and then work your way into the middle of the block.

Using Tape on Multi-Part Items
- 1. Using Tape on Multi-Part Items Hat tip to Ani Kiredjian, former AV technician extraordinaire at Cary Memorial Library in Lexington
- 2. In this example, we’re using a book that came with 3 discs. No way those were going to last in pockets! Note that spine label is already on in this case I put the discs in a 3-DVD case
- 3. We line up the book and case so the bottoms and spines are flush (hand model is library tech Nancy). Then we place them on our tape dispenser loaded with 3 inch Scotch Book Tape.
- 4. We apply the tape so it will cover both spines as if we were taping the spine of a single book.
- 5. Now, we open the “book” and apply tape to the inside of the hinge we created (so no sticky stuff is exposed).
- 6. Voila! The two pieces are attached. You can see that they sit quite nicely on the shelf.
- 7. Here’s an example using one of The Great Courses. In this case, we put the spine label over both pieces and then taped. If the case gets damaged, we’ll simply cut it off and tape a new case on.
