This document describes using chess as a tool in mentoring and counseling relationships with students. It discusses how chess can be used to address students' social and emotional needs by developing rapport in a non-threatening way and using chess pieces as metaphors for life situations. Evaluations of the program found that students enjoyed it, learned important life skills, and teachers saw improvements in students' social skills.
