This document discusses the contents and need for environmental studies. It covers 7 topics: natural resources and problems, ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, environmental pollution, social/environmental issues, and environmental protection. Environmental studies is multidisciplinary and examines the biotic and abiotic environment. It is important for maintaining quality of life and creating environmental awareness. The scope includes natural resources, ecology, pollution, waste management, and environmental protection laws.
Sanitation is paramount to human life because it contributes to safety from communicable and non-communicable diseases as well as playing important roles in human socio- economic development and sustenance of cultural values. The aim of this paper is to monitor and evaluate environmental sanitation services in Owerri West Local Government Area. Survey method was largely used in this study with questionnaire administered on 384 of which 25 respondents each were selected from 16 small villages out of 8 major communities in Owerri West Local Government Area (LGA). The result shows that 51.3% practice monthly environmental sanitation and only 33.3% of the wastes are removed from the generation point. The common refuse disposal method is the use of sanitary bin (35.3%), open dumping (20.8%) and burning (23.3%) while about 37% are dumped around surrounding bushes. This study revealed that the general environmental sanitation in Owerri West LGA is good (71.3%). Presence of Environmental Health Officer (EHO) for policy implementation (p<0.005), Frequency of EHO visit (p<0.005), level of hygiene education (p<0.005) and availability of environmental sanitation policy (p=0.008) was significantly related to the method of waste disposal adopted and Presence of Environmental Health Officer for policy implementation (EHO) (p=0.034), Frequency of EHO visit (p<0.005), level of hygiene education (p<0.005) and availability of environmental sanitation policies (p=0.001) as well as frequency of waste removal from generation point. Soil-transmitted helminth infections in relation to the knowledge and practic...IOSR Journals
The relationship between soil-transmitted helminth infections and the knowledge and practice of preventive measures among school children in rural communities in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, South-Eastern Nigeria, was investigated. Stool samples were obtained from 1,296 school children (ages 4 – 15 years) from six schools randomly selected from the study area. Structured epidemiological questionnaires were administered to the children. Out of 1,296 school children examined, 106 (8.1 %) of the children were infected by soil-transmitted infections thus: 64 (4.9 %) with Ascarislumbricoides, 33 (2.5 %) with hookworm, and 9 (0.7 %) with Trichuristrichiura. There were significant differences in the prevalence of these infections (P < 0.05). Soil-transmitted helminth infections showed statistically significant (P < 0.05) relationships with knowledge and practice of preventive measures among school children in the study area. The study revealed that soil-transmitted helminth infections were abundant among school children of the study area, indicating the necessity of implementing control measures such as chemotherapy, provision of adequate sanitary facilities and safe drinking water.
The document summarizes a study that investigated the relationship between soil-transmitted helminth infections and knowledge/practice of preventive measures among 1,296 school children in rural Nigeria. The key findings were:
1) 106 children (8.1%) were infected with soil-transmitted helminths such as Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm. Infection rates varied by type of latrine used and water source.
2) Children using open fields or pit latrines had higher infection rates than those using water closets. Source of drinking water also impacted rates, with tanker water linked to most Ascaris infections.
3) The study revealed infections were common and control measures

As graduate researcher, Centre for Environment and Society/Department of Biological
Sciences, University of Essex, UK between October 2001 - October, 2006 was part of soil
health research group. The work centered on C fluxes and sequestration in grassland and
woodland ecosystems under various levels of land management using field, laboratory and
model approaches. The modeling accounted for 7 periods of English agriculture (8050 years
comprising the prehistoric, historic, agricultural revolution, post agricultural revolution, green
planet and post green planet. CENTURY 4.0 MODEL was chosen in view of ease of
configuration to diverse ecosystem.
Apart from the quantification of levels of greenhouse gases particularly CO2; their impact on
climatic change and their sink on ameliorating these conditions; other subject areas studied
included the nutrient dynamics of such ecosystem, particularly C and N, exploration of
enzyme activities (cellulose, urease, phosphomonoesterase) and the extraction, quantification
and qualification of soil humic acids using chemical methods and 13
C-NMR Spectroscopy.
Respiration as an index of microbial activities were measured in the field and laboratory with
5. 5
auto analyser and chemical reagents respectively. These methods helped to account for
autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms roles in C-flux.
In the course of PhD studies at University of Essex, was invited to taught courses in the
Interdisciplinary Centre for Environment and Society that cut across the Departments of
Biological Sciences, Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, Economics, Essex
Business School, Government, School of Health and Human Sciences, School of law,
Literature, Film and Theatre studies and sociology. Courses cut across sustainable agriculture
and environment, eco-literacy, environmental law, environmental economics, environmental
politics, environmental governance, statistics for social science, sociology of human rights,
environmental health.
Permission was also given to attend first degree and masters courses in molecular methods in
ecology, environmental molecular microbiology, protein technology, plants, genes and
agriculture, environmental technology, research methods, marine environment, global energy
resources, global climatic change, biotechnology and genetic modification, ecology,
sociological approaches to science and technology, ground based remote sensing of weather,
conservation, water pollution biology, plant and soil response to elevated CO2, wastes and
pollution in pre-industrial society, bio treatable wastes, gene technology, capitalism,
industrialism and modernity, econometrics, process technology, air pollution.
