What we are going to do: Tell you about anything and everything that deals with “what you can expect” from an Assessment Centre is and what is special about the UNITECH Assessment Centre What we are not going to do: Tell you about anything that deals with “how you can do it”
The Assessment Centre Theory Requirements expected of the candidate Simulation exercises Observation guidelines Evaluation criteria Competence of the candidate Potential area for development
Typical Assessment Centre framework in the business world 4 – 6 candidates 0,5 - 1 observer per candidate 1 – 3 days duration Observation and assessment of candidate’s visible behaviour Assessment tool for recruiting and/or development purposes
The UNITECH-AC is slightly different from other ACs General AC goals Specialties of UNITECH-AC Evaluation of applicants by multiple assessors Test cases and role-play exercises which are typical for the specific open position A look at the person behind the application documents Evaluation mainly by HR professionals from different UNITECH Corporate Partners Exercises are focused on key aspects of UNITECH principles Heterogeneous group of applicants meets heterogeneous group of assessors to assess compatibility
The UNITECH AC consists of three components Evaluation 1. Group discussion 2. Presentation 3. Interview Duration of the 1- day AC from 09:30- 17:00 Evaluation by CP Assessors (usually HR)
Agenda Introduction 1 Preparation 2 Group discussion 3 Presentation 4 Interview 5 Conclusion 6
Prepare The one thing that I’ve found is that the more I practice, the luckier I get Billy Casper (1996), Golfer 24. Feb 2012 “ ” “ ”
Many applicants fail because they are nervous 24. Feb 2012 A healthy portion of nervousness can boost your performance Overwhelming nervousness paralyses. Preparation helps
Good Preparation for Assessment Centre Inform yourselves about the key aspects of UNITECH Practice a presentation (e.g. a 1-2 minute self-presentation ) Ask yourself which part of your application could lead to questions What specific, personal answers can you respond with? Inform yourselves about the Corporate Partner companies
You should think of some things in advance Ask if you are uncertain (Suit, tie and equivalent for ladies?) Down-dressing is easier than up-dressing Be over punctual Plan with a time buffer Inform yourself ahead of time when and where the event takes place and double-check information Pencil, Paper, copy of application documents, research on companies Better not to bring, hardcopy version of project theses, etc. Switch off your mobile phone Take out chewing gum Take key, coins, etc. out of your pocket What to wear? How to get there? What to bring? Last steps?
What do you think are the key requirements for UNITECH? Requirements expected of candidate Simulation exercise Observation guideline Evaluation criteria Competence of the candidate Potential area for development
Agenda Introduction 1 Preparation 2 Group discussion 3 Presentation 4 Interview 5 Conclusion 6
One part of the AC is the group discussion Evaluation 1. Group discussion 2. Presentation 3. Interview Divided into groups Fixed time for discussion More than one topic Observation and Evaluation by 2-3 Assessors
There are different kinds of groups discussions the goal however is mostly identical Hypothesis The group should discuss a given hypothesis and take a position E.g.: Should German universities pick their students themselves? Open discussion The group should discuss a given topic and find a solution E.g.: How could the studying conditions at German universities be improved? Role-play The group should evaluate a topic from a different perspective, e.g. board of directors E.g.: Should the employees be allowed to work from home? Every member of the group presents his/her opinion The group reaches a common result Goal
In theory it looks simple Topic Discussion Result Reality is different What is your experience from group discussions? Where have you seen difficulties? Where do you think your strengths are?
Agenda Introduction 1 Preparation 2 Group discussion 3 Presentation 4 Interview 5 Conclusion 6
The second part of the AC is a presentation Evaluation 1. Group discussion 2. Presentation 3. Interview Preparation time ca. 30 min Presentation ca. 6 min flip chart Structure/content /communication Observation and Evaluation by 1-2 assessors
There is no right or wrong way of presenting What is your experience in presenting? Do you feel comfortable during your presentation? What do you think is important for the audience? Do you remember a good speaker? Why did he/she capture your attention? Have you ever made a presentation in front of a mirror? What do your friends tell you about your presentations?
Be aware! 24. Feb 2012 Theory and practice is never the same. Presenting is not about following step by step advice from books, it is more about finding your own style which will put you in the confidence zone. This will persuade your audience.
Agenda Interview 1 UNITECH Assessment Center 2 Group discussion 3 Presentation 4 Interview 5 Conclusion 6
The third part of the AC is an interview Evaluation 1. Group discussion 2. Presentation 3. Interview Duration: 30 minutes 1-2 Assessors as interview partners
AC interviews usally follow a certain pattern Introduction Questions of assessors Questions of candidate Closing Establish a relaxed atmosphere Goal Advice Find out about your qualification Show your interest/ find out about process Keep good atmosphere and impression Be friendly Be natural Be relaxed Know your CV Be honest Be creative/ spontaneous If you have questions ask them Don´t start an interrogation Stay friendly Stay “professional” until you are out of the room Don´t ask if you passed ! Do not lie but do not sell yourself under value!
Your non-verbal communication gets observed as well Positive Negative Shake hands and get up for this, establish eye contact Sit relaxed and un-cramped Smile in a friendly way Keep appropriate distance Use natural gestures and mirror theirs Take a cup of coffee if you want to Too soft/hard handshake without eye contact Too relaxed, hanging out at the table Artificial smile Sitting too close/ touching Beat on the table with your fingers/play with decoration Drink 10 bottles of water
Agenda Introduction 1 Preparation 2 Group discussion 3 Presentation 4 Interview 5 Conclusion 6
Summary The goal of every selection process is that both parties get to know each other Take your chance! The assessors will try to evaluate you based on multiple criteria and will look at you from different perspectives, in different situations Do not try to play a role! Above all, be yourself. The Assessors want to see your best! They want to get the right people on the UNITECH Programme. Present your strengths You can always improve your self presentation abilities Ask for feedback and learn from it! If you are not selected it does not mean you are “stupid”, it just means it did not fit or you had a bad day Do not stop trying!
Thank you for your attention! Good luck! (Remember, it comes from good preparation!) Questions???

  • #7 - Former name development center
  • #13 Note from DW: One’s hair cut is not a big issue – we have seen some amazing hair shapes, colours and lenghts over the yeasrs. The Assessors can see behind the hair, but there has to be something there to see, and the hair may make it harder to see.)
