Task 1
Nikon Ahmed
Client information
The London Borough of Redbridge is a London Borough in North - East London where the
administrative headquarters is at Redbridge Town Hall in Ilford and they have created a brief
towards the local community and issued it to the pupils of Redbridge as a whole. The leader
of the Council is Jas Athwal who was first elected the Council in May 2010 and elected by
fellow Labour Councillors to the role of Leader of the Redbridge Labour Group in October
2011. Local councils such as Redbridge are responsible for the public hygiene which may
include cleanliness of the streets, collection of waste, recycling and other ethical decisions. It
is also useful for people as they can report any problems to the council which then takes
action based on what the report/complaint is.
In 2011 the population of Redbridge was recorded to be at 278,970. Redbridge has the third
highest proportion of children and a higher-than-average proportion of older adults, the
population density was last recorded at 4,945 residents per km2 the life length expectancy at
birth for Redbridge residents equals to 65.5 years for males and 62.4 years for females.
Total population
Redbridge is estimated to have a population of 296,800 as at 30 June 2015, an
increase of 3,800 since 30 June 2014.
Children
Redbridge is estimated to have 67,500 persons aged between 0 and 15 (23% of the
total population)
Redbridge is estimated to have 193,000 persons aged between 16 and 64 years of
age (65% of the total population)
Retirement age
Redbridge is estimated to have 36,200 persons aged 65 and upwards (12% of the
total population)
There is also a list of districts within the Borough of Redbridge, including Barkingside,
Hainault and Fairlop which are going to be the main focus of our group, the main district will
be Barkingside which has three councillors who are Ashley Stephen Kissin, Karen Packer
and Keith Prince. These are the representatives of the community and their responsibilities
include all ethical decisions including decisions based on religion, culture and ethnicity
Structure of brief
Our project aims to create content for the local community as the client is the Redbridge
council with whom we have an informal agreement meaning that there is no contract that we
have to sign in order to participate, the same applies to other people who want to participate
with this project. Due to the project having an informal agreement we have a broader
number of options we can take which will increase our creativity as a whole. Therefore,
topics, questions and general opinions can be chosen and used as we wish which will make
us more independent and unique. The topic that we can choose to talk about during our up
to 10 minutes long “documentary” can include anything that is related to society issues
where awareness has to be raised. There are a lot of issues such as contamination,
recycling, health issues. My group have decided to tackle crime issues regarding knife
crimes specifically because we feel it’s a problem that is not being addressed enough and
properly as recent datas from the ONS (Office for National Statistics) state that the
Police-recorded crime has risen by 10% across England and Wales – the largest annual rise
for a decade. Also, the latest crime figures for the 12 months to March 2017 also show an
18% rise in violent crime, including a 20% surge in gun and knife crime. In addition to that,
the official figures show a 26% rise to 723 in the homicide rate.
This is a graph specifically on redbridge
In addition to the brief, there is also an indirect competition involved as pupils have to
compete against each other on who can make the best content as the best one will be
broadcasted locally which will highly increase the name of the people who won as then they
will also have a better reputation as they will be known from the local community for their
success.
Competition is a key element in this brief as this makes people give their best which again
means that at the end there will be best product possible from participants which should
increase the overall quality of content at the end. Other positive sides of competition are the
fact that it gives to those young people a more competitive mind - set which will help them in
the near future outside school as there is a lot of competition for Universities, jobs,
apprenticeships and more.
Purpose of project
Projects like this are non-profit projects which means that no money will be raised just for the
purpose of making a profit as the main goal of this brief is to help society, to make the
community aware of what dangers can be found locally. Cohesion of communities is another
objective of this project as we want to raise problems that we feel like have a rather huge
impact into our society knife - crimes which is what my group wants to research about as we
feel like in our local community this is a topic that needs to be addressed as the information
is required to be spread out to the people in our local community.
Audience, why you are writing to this audience and what audience
Another key goal of this project is to change people’s view and to unite the community as
awareness of specific problems need to be raised. Surveillance is another key element that’s
present in this project (related to Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications Theory 1974)
and this is about finding out what’s happening in other places in the world which means that
it’s spreading information and advertising in a way places; As the project will be aired, more
people will get to know about Redbridge and in this instance and it will give crucial
information about it.
An example of a project that had success was the “Teenagers campaign to raise awareness
of genocide” on the 10/12/2015. This project
has been conducted to raise awareness of how
education did not teach other important events
beside the ones everyone knows about already
as based on their research “81% could not
name any modern genocides.” This project has
been conducted at the House of Commons from
a group of students from Hampton school.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schoolreport/35060491
Another example comes from BBC One Panorama called “Germany’ s New Nazis” first
shown at 10:45pm on 19 Sep 2017, which talks about how violent right-wing extremism in
Germany has surged to its highest level with a record number of attacks against asylum
seekers and their supporters, therefore this project aims at raising awareness on the
problems such a powerful country can bring as it is one of the most powerful countries in
Europe, it also informs better people on what is happening in Freital as the people who
conducted this project have analyzed and gathered their datas and facts by staying there for
six months based on what they've stated.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b095zf2s/panorama-germanys-new-nazis.
Another project still from Panorama BBC One is “Africa's Billion Pound Migrant Trail” where
they talk about the African migrant trade and they reveal information about trade of slavery
still being a current issue as well as how young girls are committing themselves to years of
prostitution to pay their way to Europe from Africa, this project as much as the others aims to
give information and spread out the knowledge of what is happening in certain parts of the
world as there are many issues that government tries to hide or doesn't tackle.

Opportunities offered
Beside creating this project, the experience of participating to this, offers students a broad
range of opportunities and experiences as well as enhancing the knowledge of local areas.
Creating a 10 minutes “documentary” is a big challenge as it is not easy to research and
expose what has been researched in a video, but at the end, this will boost up the CV as this
project can be included in it. This can also increase the employability of the individual as
such a task, to be completed with teamwork, competitiveness and research will show the
potential of the individual to the employers who will be more. Other than working, this brief
will also be greatly useful when applying to university or to any other institution as it will show
your potential as an individual and it will put you further than other students who have not
done any other projects.
Apart from the benefits that have already been listed, this project also gives people the
opportunity to learn how to communicate better and to do teamwork, communication is not
fundamental only with teammates, but also with the audience and public they are going to
engage with during the “documentary”, this communication with the target audience also
teaches people to control the nerves which is another key skill that needs to be learnt for the
future life of work as working in an office, doing presentations in an university, doing job
interviews will require a good sense of balance between being calm and nervous.
Communication skills also connect with the body language and approach with target
audience as during the “documentary” a specific formal way to talk is required as well as
hand gestures and body pose which need to look professional and comfortable for the
audience to talk to.
In addition to that, timing and organisation are crucial to learn as skills and in this project too
as being organised, knowing what to do to meet the deadline. As timing is important, also
planning what to do and make little deadlines is a crucial skill that is needed to show and
prove, along the way, practical skills will be learn, these include filming techniques, shooting,
editing, use of sound, use of the internet to research, writing scripts, cooperation and
creativeness. One last skill that will be learnt during this brief is to solve problems that get
along the way as there can be various issues such as missing key members, weather issues
or equipment problems that need to be solved with ease and effectiveness in order to
complete the product before the deadline.

This is a graph specifically on redbridge In addition to the brief, there is also an indirect competition involved as pupils have to compete against each other on who can make the best content as the best one will be broadcasted locally which will highly increase the name of the people who won as then they
  • 3. will also have a better reputation as they will be known from the local community for their success. Competition is a key element in this brief as this makes people give their best which again means that at the end there will be best product possible from participants which should increase the overall quality of content at the end. Other positive sides of competition are the fact that it gives to those young people a more competitive mind - set which will help them in the near future outside school as there is a lot of competition for Universities, jobs, apprenticeships and more. Purpose of project Projects like this are non-profit projects which means that no money will be raised just for the purpose of making a profit as the main goal of this brief is to help society, to make the community aware of what dangers can be found locally. Cohesion of communities is another objective of this project as we want to raise problems that we feel like have a rather huge impact into our society knife - crimes which is what my group wants to research about as we feel like in our local community this is a topic that needs to be addressed as the information is required to be spread out to the people in our local community. Audience, why you are writing to this audience and what audience Another key goal of this project is to change people’s view and to unite the community as awareness of specific problems need to be raised. Surveillance is another key element that’s present in this project (related to Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications Theory 1974) and this is about finding out what’s happening in other places in the world which means that it’s spreading information and advertising in a way places; As the project will be aired, more people will get to know about Redbridge and in this instance and it will give crucial information about it. An example of a project that had success was the “Teenagers campaign to raise awareness of genocide” on the 10/12/2015. This project has been conducted to raise awareness of how education did not teach other important events beside the ones everyone knows about already as based on their research “81% could not name any modern genocides.” This project has been conducted at the House of Commons from a group of students from Hampton school. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schoolreport/35060491 Another example comes from BBC One Panorama called “Germany’ s New Nazis” first shown at 10:45pm on 19 Sep 2017, which talks about how violent right-wing extremism in Germany has surged to its highest level with a record number of attacks against asylum seekers and their supporters, therefore this project aims at raising awareness on the problems such a powerful country can bring as it is one of the most powerful countries in Europe, it also informs better people on what is happening in Freital as the people who
  • 4. conducted this project have analyzed and gathered their datas and facts by staying there for six months based on what they've stated. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b095zf2s/panorama-germanys-new-nazis. Another project still from Panorama BBC One is “Africa's Billion Pound Migrant Trail” where they talk about the African migrant trade and they reveal information about trade of slavery still being a current issue as well as how young girls are committing themselves to years of prostitution to pay their way to Europe from Africa, this project as much as the others aims to give information and spread out the knowledge of what is happening in certain parts of the world as there are many issues that government tries to hide or doesn't tackle. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0962gny/panorama-africas-billion-pound-migrant-trail Opportunities offered Beside creating this project, the experience of participating to this, offers students a broad range of opportunities and experiences as well as enhancing the knowledge of local areas. Creating a 10 minutes “documentary” is a big challenge as it is not easy to research and expose what has been researched in a video, but at the end, this will boost up the CV as this project can be included in it. This can also increase the employability of the individual as such a task, to be completed with teamwork, competitiveness and research will show the potential of the individual to the employers who will be more. Other than working, this brief will also be greatly useful when applying to university or to any other institution as it will show your potential as an individual and it will put you further than other students who have not done any other projects. Apart from the benefits that have already been listed, this project also gives people the opportunity to learn how to communicate better and to do teamwork, communication is not fundamental only with teammates, but also with the audience and public they are going to engage with during the “documentary”, this communication with the target audience also teaches people to control the nerves which is another key skill that needs to be learnt for the future life of work as working in an office, doing presentations in an university, doing job interviews will require a good sense of balance between being calm and nervous.
