Travelio Tech Talks 2022 presentation
The recommended workflow for implementing GitOps with Kubernetes manifests is known as trunk-based development. This method defines one branch as the "trunk" and carries out development on each environment in a different short-lived branch. When development is complete for that environment, the developer creates a pull request for the branch to the trunk. Developers can also create a fork to work on an environment, and then create a branch to merge the fork into the trunk.
Once the proper approvals are done, the pull request (or the branch from the fork) gets merged into the trunk. The branch for that feature is deleted, keeping your branches to a minimum. Trunk-based development trades branches for directories.
You can think of the trunk as a "main" or primary branch. production and prod are popular names for the trunk branch.
Trunk-based development came about to enable continuous integration and continuous delivery by supplying a development model focused on the fast delivery of changes to applications. But this model also works for GitOps repositories because it keeps things simple and more in tune with how Kustomize and Helm work. When you record deltas between environments, you can clearly see what changes will be merged into the trunk. You won’t have to cherry-pick nearly as often, and you’ll have the confidence that what is in your Git repository is what is actually going into your environment. This is what you want in a GitOps workflow.

At AWS re:Invent, we have launched support for blue/green deployments for services hosted using AWS Fargate and Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS). Blue/green deployments help you minimize downtime during application updates. They allow you to launch a new version of your application alongside the old version and test the new version before you reroute traffic to it. You can also monitor the deployment process and, if there is an issue, quickly roll back.
In this workshop, you will create a new service in AWS Fargate that uses AWS CodeDeploy to manage the deployments, testing, and traffic cutover for you.

OPENING KEYNOTE:
The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is an open source software foundation dedicated to making cloud native computing universal and sustainable. With over 300 members including the world’s largest public cloud and enterprise software companies, Alexis Richardson, CEO of Weaveworks and chair of the CNCF Technical Oversight Committee will walk you through some success stories, and why cloud native is the way forward. You’ll learn why Kubernetes and other CNCF projects have some of the fastest adoption rates in the history of open source, and how this is only the beginning.
Alexis will then show how you can increase speed and reliability in your development workflows even further by using the GitOps model, which has been developed at Weaveworks. You’ll learn about the core concepts of GitOps, including customer success stories, and how you can benefit from using this model.
Continuous Lifecycle London 2018 Event KeynoteWeaveworks
Today it’s all about delivering velocity without compromising on quality, yet it’s becoming increasingly difficult for organisations to keep up with the challenges of current release management and traditional operations. The demand for developers to own the end-to-end delivery, including operational ownership, is increasing. A “you build it, you own it” development process requires tools that developers know and understand. So I’d like to introduce “GitOps”- an agile software lifecycle for modern applications.
In this session, I will discuss these industry challenges, including current CICD trends and how they’re converging with operations and monitoring. I’ll also illustrate the GitOps model, identify best practices and tools to use, and explain how you can benefit from adopting this methodology inherited from best practices going back 10-15 years.
GitOps, Driving NGN Operations Teams 211127 #kcdgt 2021William Caban
The adoption of cloud-native principles brings new challenges. Scaling and evolving operations teams and staying up to date requires the adoption of new operational models and paradigms.
This deck presents how modern paradigms map to GitOps principles and the charactersitics that must be supported by any software used for GitOps.
As change agents for data integration, keeping pace and adapting quickly to today’s fast and fluid digital customer compelled Axway’s globally distributed R&D team to move their DevOps to the cloud. See how they leveraged Gitlab and other value stream tooling to drive their digital transformation from an on-premise Internet Service Provider to a Cloud Provider.
Follow their Continuous Integration to Continuous Security and Delivery journey to learn how they:
- Achieve 26x faster release cycles and 100% developer adoption
- Enable collaboration for multiple teams across continents and timezones
- Simplified their source code repository administration
- Implemented world-class integrations and flexible API-enabled, seamless workflows
DX, Guardrails, Golden Paths & Policy in KubernetesWeaveworks
Today’s modern enterprises are spoilt for choice with technology options, services and approaches. But in order to improve organizational productivity and development velocity, considering how developer experience plays a key role in these decisions will be a huge driver of their success.
DevEx is becoming increasingly critical for organizations because developers are important for building digital products and services. Organizations require developers to spend more time coding and less time working on infrastructure. Improving developer toolchains is essential for increasing productivity. But where does security sit in all of this?
James Governor, Analyst and Co-Founder of RedMonk and Steve George, COO at Weaveworks (the pioneers for GitOps deployments and infrastructure management) discuss the importance of DX and security in successful organizations today. They focus on how GitOps is enabling DevOps automation and allowing traditional CICD practices to shift further left.

Intro to GitOps with Weave GitOps, Flagger and LinkerdWeaveworks
You may not think of "GitOps" and "service mesh" together – but maybe you should! These two wildly different technologies are each enormously capable independently, and combined they deliver far more than the sum of their parts: a single Git commit can control workflows customized for your exact situation by taking advantage of the service mesh's ability to measure and manipulate traffic anywhere in your application's call graph, and you can rest easy knowing that Git is preserving the complete configuration for your entire application every step of the way.
See how these technologies can work together to tackle complex problems in cloud-native applications.
What you’ll get out of this:
* Understand what GitOps and service meshes can - and can't - do for you.
* Understand basic operations with GitOps and Linkerd.
* Understand the basics of continuous deployment with Weave GitOps and Linkerd.
More and more businesses are requiring developers to own end to end delivery, including operational ownership. Weaveworks will share with you what GitOps means, and how easy it is to create cloud native applications, CICD pipelines, integrate operations and more, using GitOps.
Inherited from best practices going back 10-15 years, cloud native is making these practices more relevant today. At Weaveworks, they implement these principles in their product, Weave Cloud. This not only helps customers ship apps faster, it also helps them run their own cloud native stack. This presentation will show how Weaveworks does this, identify best practices and tools, and showcase some of Weaveworks’ use cases.

Implementing a template-based approach in GitOps significantly enhances developer experience and productivity. This strategy streamlines infrastructure and application configuration, reducing errors and promoting consistency. Templates encapsulate best practices and coding standards, accelerating onboarding and ensuring conformity across projects. They act as a common language, fostering collaboration among developers, operations, and other stakeholders. The modular nature of templates encourages code reuse, speeding up development and maintaining consistency. Version control for infrastructure and configuration becomes seamless, providing transparency and traceability. Automation, coupled with templates, enhances CI/CD pipelines, enabling faster releases and reducing manual errors. This approach revolutionizes development, offering a structured, scalable, and collaborative framework. It simplifies infrastructure management, empowering teams to focus on innovation and code quality. Overall, a template-based GitOps approach creates a more efficient and controlled development lifecycle.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

5. Pros:
● Faster to iterate
● Small number of Branch to
maintain
Limitation:
● Higher technical difficulties for
releasing code to production
even use Continuous
Integration
Suggestion:
● Feature flags might be needed

7. CI:
Continuous
Integration
● A software development practice where all developers merge
code changes in a central repository (Git).
● Each change in code (commit) triggers an automated build-and-
test stage for the given repo and provides feedback to the
developer(s) who made the changes.
● Automates the build and unit test process of the new code
changes.
8. CD:
Continuous
Delivery
A software engineering approach in which teams produce software in
short cycles, ensuring that the software can be reliably released at
any time and, when releasing the software, doing so manually.
12. Key Concepts
Continuous Delivery
In Continuous Delivery Pipelines, the main characteristic is that there is a human involved to
promote a new version to production.
13. Key Concepts
Continuous Deployments
On the other hand, in Continuous Deployment Pipelines, there is NO human involved. When
a developer commits to the main branch, all the changes are propagated through all
environments reaching the Production Environment.

18. ● Spinnaker is an open-source, multi-cloud
continuous delivery platform for releasing
software changes with high velocity and
confidence.
● Require Halyard CLI to manage the
Spinnaker lifecycle.
● Can deploy apps into any on-premise VMs or
cloud data centers like AWS, GCP, Azure,
and Kubernetes.
19. ● ArgoCD is a declarative GitOps continuous
deployment tool for Kubernetes.
● Includes a command line tool and an
excellent graphical user interface
● Focused on enterprise use-cases (security,
RBAC, SSO, centralized multi-tenancy multi-
cluster management).
25. GitOps benefits
● Improved developer productivity and experience by saving time and effort. By pushing code, not
containers.
● Increased speed with continuous deployment automation.
● Improved CI/CD endurance since it provides an easy tracking mechanism.
● Higher security since Git used as a single source of truth.
● Consistency and uniformity of end-to-end workflows.
26. GitOps: the bad and the ugly
● You need to structure the environment repo and your pipelines to prevent concurrent push
on the same repo (since remote may be out of sync): multiple Cl processes can end up writing to
the same GitOps repo, causing conflicts or errors.
● Doesn't give you an opinionated way to deal with secret management (Git repositories are not
great places to store secrets, as you have to encrypt and decrypt them)
27. GitOps — Suggestions?
● Use two repos: one for app source code, another for manifest
● Never store secrets or key in manifest repo or even in your app as plain text and yes, base64 is
plain text too! (plan how to manage secrets)
