5. CV Top Tips
Your CV gives the
reader an idea of
who you are, what
your skills are and
what you’re capable
of.
6. ★ Be honest
★ Be relevant
★ Tailor your CV for the job you’re applying for (please)
★ Length: As long as it takes to include honest, relevant info - and no
longer (max 2 pages)
★ Be clear and concise - this is not a thesis
★ Correct spelling and grammar is essential
★ Make sure your design makes the information easy to consume.
It must not be hard to read your CV
★ You need to make yourself stand out - so highlight your
strengths, skills, awards, project team lead roles, accomplishments,
personal and university projects you’ve done etc
★ Include all relevant work experience or internships you’ve done
★ Remember: This is a competitive industry
7. A Good Example of Structure
Your name. It must be clear, but not
font size 100.
A very short bio, giving the reader an
idea of who you are and why they
should bother reading further
Include the most relevant pieces of
experience you have for the role you’re
applying for - anything that will make
you stand out from the crowd
List your education: Don’t include every
course you’ve done within your degree
- unless it was an optional extra
Don’t waffle - be concise and relevant.
List the things that stood out from each
job/role/position. You can also list any
additional projects you’ve done in your
own time. Internships/Work Experience
Photos are not
required, but it can
help to make you
memorable. Keep it
professional.
IMPORTANT we
need to be able to
get hold of you.
Include any
blogs/websites that
have relevant work
examples.
We will look you up
on social media.
Skills matrices are
ok if you’ve got
MAD skills, if not,
make sure to
include a list of
programming
languages you’ve
had experience
with.
8. FIRST LINE SCREENING
Once you’ve got
your CV finalised
(and proofread)
you’ll actually apply
for the job. Be
prepared -
9. ★ The #1 rule of first line screening is to READ THE
INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY
★ First line screening is an automated evaluation process - it
identifies whether or not you have the basic *basic* skills
required to fulfill the role
★ The type of evaluation is relevant to the type of role that
you’re applying for
★ More and more companies are using this (in every industry)
to deal with the volume of applications for a single role
★ It also has zero bias which creates an even playing field for
each applicant
★ So - do your research and know if there will be screening and
what to expect around time allocation, the type of test etc. At
SOLIDitech are very clear within our application process about
what to expect
★ It’s subtle - but companies are also testing your ability to
follow instructions (you would be surprised...)
★ … SO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY
10. Also - when making
your application:
★ Make sure you understand which role you’re applying for and
that it’s a role you want, and that you have the relevant skills
for
★ Be clear on what the application process is and that you have
enough time to complete it
★ Sometimes you are asked to provide additional documentation,
like a university transcript or a matric certificate. Make sure you
have what you need.
★ Be prepared. And READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY
11. INTERVIEW TOP TIPS
If you are successful
in your application
and make it through
to the face-to-face
interview ‘round’ - well
done :)
12. ★ Dress appropriately. It doesn’t matter what the company dress
code is - you still need to look smart and respectful when you
arrive
★ Do your research. Know a bit about the company and what they
do/what they’ve got going on
★ BE ON TIME. In fact - be 10-15 min early. There might be
parking issues, you might struggle to get through security etc
★ Expect the unexpected. Some interviewers like to throw
curveballs at you to see how you think
★ Be aware of the length of the interview and make sure you
have enough time
★ KNOW if there are any tests/evaluations that you will be
expected to do - and be prepared for those
★ Don’t rush into any answers if you’re unsure, take your time,
breathe
13. Have a good idea of the type of work environment, and/or career
you want. Tailor some questions towards finding out that information. It’s
a 2-way interview. Here are some good example questions:
★ Please can you describe your company culture?
★ If I were to be offered the position, what would my first week be
like?
★ How long have you (the interviewer) worked here, and what do you
like/dislike about the company/your role?
★ Do you have a high staff turnover?
★ How long has the company been operating (unless you saw this info
on the company website)?
★ What are the career progression options for me? What training
opportunities are there? How is your company structured?
★ What is your tech stack?
★ Is there anything about me or my experience that you’re concerned
about?
14. WHAT TO
EXPECT FROM YOUR NEW JOB
Congratulations -
You got the job!
Now what?
15. ★ Nothing is final until you’ve received a signed contract and
you have signed and returned it - so make sure that’s done
within the given timeframe
★ Make sure you know what time to turn up on your first day
(hint: It won’t be 7:30 am)
★ If you’re not sure already - ask about the dress code
★ Your first few weeks will be filled with: Onboarding, training, HR
paperwork, getting to know your new team mates and
understand the lay of the land
★ HAVE FUN!
