The General Assembly is the main deliberative and policymaking body of the UN that meets annually to discuss international issues. The Security Council works to maintain peace and security by addressing threats and acts of aggression. The Economic and Social Council coordinates the economic and social work of UN agencies. The International Court of Justice settles disputes between states and gives advisory opinions. The Trusteeship Council suspended operations after the independence of Palau, the last UN trust territory.
Abolishing the death penalty, upholding freedom of expression, safeguarding children’s rights, promoting gender equality, combating terrorism, guaranteeing compliance with quality standards for medicines and health care… These issues affect each and every one of us, but do you know what role is played by the Council of Europe in these spheres?
By drawing up, implementing and monitoring over 200 conventions, the Council of Europe has been striving – since its creation in 1949 – to uphold the fundamental values of our continent: human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
The best known of its treaties is the European Convention on Human Rights, and the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights are regularly reported on in the media.
This brochure provides a quick overview of what the Council of Europe does and how it works.

Council meetings were held in ordinary session four times a year and as often as needed in extraordinary sessions. 107 public sessions were held between 1920 and 1939. From 1922 onwards, the minutes appeared in the Official Journal. Records for meetings held before 1922 were published separately. The resolutions can only be found in the minutes of the meetings.
