When we consider the value of volunteers and constituents in our organizations, please take into consideration the return on investment – the social return on investment. I would argue that the social return is far more powerful when it is driven by the very folks that have experienced . Our
The purpose of this training is to illustrate the significance and importance of solar air heat in the mix of solar technologies. Solar air heat provides direct space heat to buildings. This chart illustrate the importance of efficiency prior to renewables. Does it make economic sense to target 60,000 Btu/hr heating load or more highly efficient home? Energy efficiency can dramatically reduce the overall energy load thereby reducing the necessary size of a renewable energy system. This in turn makes renewable energy more accessible because it is smaller in size and therefore less costly.
Thirteen years ago, I was one of RREAL’s first clients. I experienced serious financial hardship and struggled to make ends meet. I couldn’t afford both my heating bill and literally ran out of propane. I was forced to choose between adequate heat and other basic needs. This is fuel poverty and I was one of about 30 million Americans who have to make similar choices each and every heating season. I had no choice but to apply for energy assistance. How many of you are familiar with energy assistance? It was a great short term solution, but I got to thinking as I made it through the heating season that there might be a better way. When the next heating season started, I asked my energy assistance provider if we could get a low or no cost loan to purchase a solar heating system instead, so they wouldn’t have to keep throwing money at my lack of ability to pay for my heat. They said no. I said oh, and began to think about how I could make that happen. Serendipitously, I heard of a solar heating system that was being dismantled and discarded. A home changed hands, and the new owners were remodeling. I went dumpster diving. I literally drove the truck home with a fully functional solar thermal system that merely needed installing.I saved more than energy assistance was providing, and the light bulb went off. If we can do this for our family, there’s no reason we can’t do so for families across the nation.
And across the nation, there is enormous need. Hundreds of thousands of Minnesota families depend on energy assistance, and although it is a critical social service, it is not offering a lasting solution. It is like applying a band-aid to a wound that needs much more serious attention. We are literally hemmorrhaging scarce public resources to apply a very temporary solution. In Minnesota alone, we spend about a hundred million bucks every year applying a short term solution. Nationwide, it is in the billions every year.
Solar air heat is a forced air heating system. Therefore, it follows the same rules, regulations and design considerations as forced air heating systems. In the same way that solar water heat is a hyrdonic heating systems, solar air heat is a forced air heating system. Solar air heat can actually be deployed in a variety of ways; however, the primary emphasis of this training manual is on glazed, recirculation systems. Although we will discuss other ways in which solar air heat can be effectively deployed, the primary application for the technology is to re-circulate building air through the collectors thereby harvesting heat. Although fresh-air can be brought in through the collectors, that application is for pre-heating ventilation make-up air. We are primarily focusing on addressing space heating loads and the best way to do so is to re-circulate air through the collectors. This is a model of a typical residential solar air heat system. The collectors pictured in front would be mounted vertically on the exterior wall, while the balance of system parts behind the collectors would be located on the inside of the building. Air from the building is pushed or pulled through the collectors and back into the building.
So, that’s what we have been doing for nearly 13 years – providing solar heat to low-income communities.
The Pyramid of Conservation, developed by Minnesota Power, is a graphic representation of the importance of energy efficiency and conservation. Solar is not the first step. In fact, solar thermal is a step to be considered long after a wide variety of energy efficiency measures. An energy audit can help identify efficiency and conservation measures that are appropriate for a given site. Renewables should be considered after most energy efficiency upgrades have been accomplished. Again, conservation is a more appropriate first step in addressing our energy needs.
