The Heart of Texas Urban Gardening Coalition will host the Root Day fair on May 9, 2015 at the Baylor community garden from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event aims to teach senior adults about gardening and wellness activities. Activities will include cooking demonstrations, garden tours, senior aerobic classes, and more. The goal is to provide education and promote overall senior wellness, with 100 to 200 seniors expected to participate. The event is funded by a grant from Baylor University's Campus Kitchen program.

On May 9th, UGC will host their first annual Roots Day event to raise awareness about senior hunger and provide tools to decrease food insecurity among seniors. UGC was able to organize Roots Day after their partner, the Baylor University Campus Kitchen, received a grant. UGC hopes events like Roots Day and their Junior Master Gardener Training program will educate community members of all ages on the importance of gardening and growing one's own healthy food.

The third annual Waynestock concert was held in Wayne, NJ on July 22, 2012 to raise funds for music education and showcase local bands. Over 20 bands performed on three stages in front of 300 people. The event organizer, Matthew Smith, started planning for the following year's concert shortly after. All proceeds from the concert were donated to Education Through Music, raising $600 to support music programs in public schools.

Blue donation bins have been placed around campus for students to deposit non-perishable food items, which will be given to the Just Food food bank of Lawrence. The food drive aims to benefit hungry students at KU and throughout Douglas County. A number of events are also scheduled throughout the month to raise awareness of hunger issues.

The Ottawa County Department of Public Health received a state award for its beach health education campaign. The campaign educated beach visitors on how to prevent water-related illnesses, such as keeping pets off the beach and washing hands. Water tests over the past decade showed the county beaches had very good water quality, but advisories could not be posted for 24 hours after a water quality test. The education campaign provided a proactive way to protect public health at the beaches.

The Baldwin Center is a comprehensive human services agency serving Pontiac, Michigan since 1981. It provides food, clothing, education, and empowerment to men, women, and children in the community. Corinna Muntean volunteered at the Baldwin Center in November as part of a group from Oakland University. She coordinated the large group of students and communicated with the Center in advance. Muntean also helped track student service-learning for an AmeriCorps Vista Worker. The Baldwin Center relies on volunteers and is grateful for Muntean's support. They look forward to working with her again in the future.

Green Schools Program in Baltimore City
Despite a shortened project timeline and a busy spring semester of standardized testing and holidays, the BCPSS Green Schools Program has shown a fair bit of success in reducing overall energy use in the three school buildings where the program has been piloted. The February and March energy bills show a combined decrease of 2.7% overall (only partial data is available for April at this time), resulting in a 7.2 Kw, $1,067 savings between the three buildings.
These results in each of these facilities are the product of the ongoing efforts of teachers and students who have been actively engaging in saving energy and getting everyone in the building involved in simple actions like turning off lights and unplugging electronics when not in use.
The focus of the first few 6 weeks was placed on educating student Green Teams about the basics of energy efficiency, familiarizing them with the use of simple diagnostic tools and guiding them through the collection of energy data from various parts of their facility.
The focus after spring break shifted towards outreach and engagement of other students and all teachers and staff. Students generated recommendations to share with school administrators, and then used their creativity to craft announcements, posters, visual aids and songs (!) to spread the message of energy efficiency.

The event will be held at the Baylor community garden at 9th and James and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. This is the first time the UGC has hosted the event and they look to make it an annual occasion. Activities for the day will include: cooking demonstrations, garden tours/demos, senior aerobic classes, and more. They are expecting around 100 to 200 seniors to participate. Baylor University senior form Tioga, ND, and UGC volunteer, Taylor Anderson said the event is important because, “It teaches people about gardening and all the factors that go in to gardening and how they can do it at their own at home.” Senior food insecurity and wellness are serious issues in Waco. The goal of the event is to provide an educational and enjoyable environment to promote overall senior wellness. The event is being funded with a grant from Baylor University’s Campus Kitchen program.
