Tyree Guyton is an artist from Detroit, Michigan who created the Heidelberg Project, an outdoor art installation and museum using discarded found objects from his childhood neighborhood. Seeing that his neighborhood was struggling with poverty and neglect, Guyton transformed the area into a living art exhibit in 1986 to raise awareness of the community's hardships. With help from local children, he gathered discarded items and constructed sculptures, paintings and installations across the neighborhood to beautify the area and draw attention to its challenges. The Heidelberg Project served to improve lives by empowering residents and communities through art.
