What is Pest?
 Pest: Any, organism that causes
significant and economic damage
to crops, stored produced and
animals.
 Insect pest: Insects that cause
economic loss to plant and plant
produces and attack livestock or
man.
 All pest are insects but all insects
are not pest. Example: Beneficial
insects- Honey Bee, Hoverfly.
Categories of Pests
Based on
Season and
Locality
Based on
Intensity of
Infestation
Based on
Damage
Potential
Based on Season and Locality
 Regular pests: Pests that occur
more frequently on a crop having
close association. These insect
pests are expected to occur on the
crop sometime before the harvest.
Exp: Cotton aphid.
 Occasional pests: Pests that occur
rather infrequently and have no
close association with a particular
crop.
Exp: Caseworm of rice.

 Seasonal pests: Pests that occur on a
crop during a particular part of the year.
Exp: Red hairy caterpillar in groundnut.
 Persistent pests: Pests, which occur on
a crop almost throughout the year.
Exp: Thrips on chillies.
 Sporadic pests: Pests, which occur in a
few isolated localities.
Exp: Tobacco leaf eating caterpillar

Thrips
Based on Intensity of Infestation
 Epidemic pests: Pests, which occur
in severe form in a region or
locality at a particular season.
Exp: Locust.
 Endemic pests: Pests, which occur
regularly and confined to a
particular area of locality.
Exp: White grub in Nanded.
Locust
White grub
Based on Damage Potential
 Key pests: These are the most
severely damaging pests. The damage is
always above the EIL.
Exp: Gram pod borer.
 Major pests: These are pests with the
population crosses EIL quite frequently
and require repeated control measures
to avoid economic damage.
Exp: Whitefly.
Gram pod borer
Whitefly
 Minor pests: These are pests with
population rarely crosses EIL and
fluctuates around ETL.
Exp: Rice hispa.
 Negligible pests: Pests which
causes normally less than 5% loss in
the yield are called negligible
pests.
Exp: Leaf Minor on Cotton.
