Martin Eberhard founded Tesla in 2003 with the goal of creating an environmentally friendly sports car. The first Tesla prototype was called the Roadster, based on the Lotus Elise but with powerful electric motors and batteries. After delays, the Roadster launched in 2008 to enthusiastic response. Tesla's next vehicle was the Model S, an electric sedan aimed at a broader market. It launched in 2008 with a $465 million loan from the US government to promote energy independence. Tesla's innovations were considered radical because they introduced new electric vehicle technologies that significantly departed from gasoline-powered cars.
