Turning off electronics when not in use can save significant amounts of energy and money. Leaving a TV in standby mode uses about 1 kWh of electricity every 2 days, costing around 30 euros per year. Producing that 1 kWh requires burning 0.9 kg of coal or oil and emits 2.5 kg of carbon dioxide. If all 2 million Danish TVs were left on standby constantly it would use 360 million kWh per year, cost 60 million euros, require burning 36,000 tons of coal or oil, and emit 90,000 tons of carbon dioxide.
