Turbo machines basics
Turbomachinery, in mechanical engineering,
describes machines that transfer energy between
a rotor and a fluid, including
both turbines and compressors.

Turbine transfers energy from a fluid to a rotor, a
compressor transfers energy from a rotor to a fluid
1
Turbo machines basics
These two types of machines are governed by the same
basic relationships including Newton's second Law of
Motion and Euler’s impulse momentum equation .

Centrifugal pumps are also turbomachines that transfer
energy from a rotor to a fluid, usually a liquid, while
turbines and compressors usually work with a gas and
hydraulic turbines works with a fluid like water.

Comparisons of Turbomachines with positive displacement machines
P.W.Ingle Department of Mechanical Engineering
Positive Displacement Machines Turbomachines
Involves thermodynamics and mechanical
actions between nearly static fluid and slow
moving surface, volume change cause
pressure change.
Positive Displacements machines are low
speed machines.
These machines have low volumetric
efficiency
Involves thermodynamic and dynamic
actions between continuously flowing
fluid and rotating element, the pressure
change occurs primarily by means of
dynamic actions of rotating elements .
Turbomachines are high speed machines.
These machines have high volumetric
efficiency

Positive Displacement Machines
Efficiency of conversion is high.
Positive displacement machine like
reciprocating compressor is a low
speed isothermal machine.
