Indonesia declared independence on August 17, 1945 after years of fighting against colonial rule. The 1945 Constitution established Indonesia as a sovereign, unitary state based on Pancasila ideals of nationalism, internationalism, democracy, social justice, and belief in God. However, the struggle for freedom was not over and continued against threats to its young democracy.
