How does TripChain work?
Understanding Definitions
• Application Program Interface (API):
– A set of routines, protocols, and tools for building
software applications. An API specifies how software
components should interact. A good API makes it easier
to develop an application by providing all the building
blocks needed.

• Blockchain Database:
– A blockchain is a distributed database that is updated in
near real time, stored in decentralized locations, and
easy to monitor. It has a level of security that insures
that no one party can modify a database entry, because,
in a sense, everyone is watching.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 SUBMITTED ABSTRACT The TripChain framework represents an innovation in how trip generation data points can be stored and propagated for use within the transportation industry. This is accomplished through the implementation of a distributed, open peer-to-peer database for transportation professionals. The presentation will review current marketing research regarding problems and opportunities with the present approach to trip generation rates. Next, we will examine how the TripChain framework can address these opportunities and fulfill its objectives to: Make it easier to contribute new trip generation data; Promote more robust data usage within the industry; and Help professionals better plan for local situations using targeted trip generation rates. And finally, we will discuss next steps for TripChain to validate this framework concept and issue a call to action to assess its potential by collaborating with the ITE and industry professionals. In alignment with ITE direction, it is important for transportation professionals to consider new means to gather and analyze data with concepts such as Person Trips and Mixed Use Developments (MXD) becoming more prevalent within the industry and the ITE rethinking how trip generation is defined, collected, and analyzed. TripChain represents a new concept, based on emerging blockchain technology, to share data across the industry while at the same time maintaining data integrity and consistency (i.e. everyone uses a common database, always up-to-date). New ways of propagating data fits in with the “moving in new directions” theme at a time when the ITE is simultaneously re-evaluating the role of trip generation data and is currently updating its Trip Generation manual (10th Edition). Most relevant to the proposed TripChain presentation, the ITE Statement on the Future Direction of Trip Generation and Advances in Urban Trip Generation (ITE Journal, July 2016, p. 16-19) provided “Steps Forward” bullets discussing new direction for trip generation. The following ITE “Steps Forward” are most relevant to the TripChain framework concept considering the foregoing discussion and proposed presentation: Encourage engagement and collaboration between public agencies, private entities, professional associations (especially ITE), and in general anyone that uses trip generation data to share and discuss findings, implications, and desired outcomes. Encourage the exploration and publication of alternative resources (data, methods, technology) that complement or extend trip generation data and practices. Encourage the posting of all public-agency sponsored urban trip generation data on accessible websites and the submission of privately-collected data to ITE for inclusion in its growing person trip database. For more information, please visit http://tripchain.org/. Thank you for your interest and consideration of the TripChain concept for the 2017 ITE/CITE conference!
