- China and the US are the two largest emitters of carbon dioxide in the world, together accounting for over 40% of global emissions. While China is currently the largest overall emitter, emissions per capita are still much lower than the US due to China's larger population.
- Both countries have committed to reducing emissions in the coming decades to help keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius as required by the Paris Agreement, but their current policies and targets are still seen as insufficient by climate analysts.
- Decarbonizing the global economy is projected to require massive investment on the order of $150 trillion over the next 30 years, which will impact industries and sectors worldwide in addition to providing opportunities for green technologies and
The Future Of Renewable Energy And RE Policy MechanismsSheri Elliott
The document discusses renewable energy policy mechanisms and the future of renewable energy. It notes that renewable energies can compete with fossil fuels if subsidies are leveled between the industries. Currently, fossil fuels receive over 85% of energy subsidies in the US. Investments in wind energy, stimulated by the production tax credit, have significantly lowered costs and increased domestic manufacturing jobs. For renewable energies to effectively replace fossil fuels, policies need to incentivize their growth and competitiveness.
The document discusses opportunities in decarbonizing the electricity sector through investment in climate technology companies. Specifically, it notes three tailwinds driving this transition: 1) the rise of renewable energy sources like solar which are projected to make up 69% of Australia's electricity by 2030, 2) decentralization of the electricity grid through distributed energy resources like rooftop solar and batteries, and 3) increased demand for carbon offsets which could grow 15-100x by 2050. The document profiles several startups working in these areas and outlines how venture capital can help scale solutions to lower the cost of clean technologies.
McKinsey - Solar power-darkest before dawnRobert Mertz
This document summarizes a McKinsey report on the solar power industry. It finds that while the industry currently faces challenges from oversupply and reduced subsidies, costs for solar power will continue to decline significantly in the coming years. By 2020, installed solar capacity could reach 400-600 GW globally, a 50-fold increase from 2005. Much of this growth will come from distributed generation serving customers not reliant on subsidies. Key customer segments are residential and commercial users in sunny areas, those with moderate sun and high electricity prices, and off-grid applications. The industry is entering a maturation phase that could enable stable expansion after 2015 if companies focus on cost reductions.
Kateri Callahan joined Israeli mayors and senior representatives from local Tel Aviv authorities and agencies to discuss the challenges and potential for Israeli cities in deploying energy efficiency at scale. Showcasing success stories and case studies from the U.S. and around the world, Callahan demonstrated the economic, environmental, and security benefits of advancing programs, technologies, funding and infrastructure that promote efficient energy use.

This document discusses what makes energy investing and entrepreneurship uniquely challenging compared to other sectors. It argues that energy entrepreneurs require a broader set of skills than entrepreneurs in other fields, including multi-disciplinary scientific and technical knowledge, the ability to manage long timelines, deal with large financial requirements, navigate public and political issues, and effectively partner with entrenched industry players that control critical infrastructure. While renewable energy has received significant investment, the author argues more focus is needed on innovations related to hydrocarbon energy, which will continue to dominate global demand for the foreseeable future. Developing the types of entrepreneurs suited for the energy sector remains a major challenge holding back progress.
This document summarizes Bill Aulet's perspective on what is wrong with energy investing. Some key points:
- While renewable energy receives significant investment, the hydrocarbon industry still accounts for 80-90% of energy demand and will for decades. More focus should be placed on improving hydrocarbon extraction and reducing its environmental impact.
- Private equity money is flooding into renewable/alternative energy but not enough is going towards improving the hydrocarbon industry. Investors are "majoring in minors" by overemphasizing renewables.
- Entrepreneurship in the energy sector is uniquely difficult compared to other industries due to factors like large scale, long timelines, regulation, and dependence on existing infrastructure. Not enough

It argues that energy entrepreneurs require a broader set of skills than entrepreneurs in other fields, including multi-disciplinary scientific and technical knowledge, the ability to manage long timelines, deal with large financial requirements, navigate public and political issues, and effectively partner with existing energy infrastructure monopolies that control distribution. While renewable energy has received significant investment, the author argues more focus should also be placed on innovations that improve hydrocarbon extraction and use given hydrocarbons will continue to dominate energy supply for decades. The challenges of energy entrepreneurship have been underestimated and present barriers to developing the energy sector.

It argues that energy entrepreneurs require a broader set of skills than entrepreneurs in other fields, including multi-disciplinary scientific and technical knowledge, the ability to manage long timelines, deal with large financial requirements, navigate public and political issues, and effectively partner with incumbent energy companies that control critical infrastructure. Overall, the document asserts that energy entrepreneurship is one of the hardest forms of entrepreneurship due to these compounding factors, and that more needs to be done to support energy entrepreneurs given the large capital now available for energy investing.
