Lonesome George, estimated to be around 100 years old, is the sole surviving member of his subspecies and was moved to the Charles Darwin Research Station for protection after goats destroyed the habitat on Pina Island. Although the two females from Española Island have laid eggs with Lonesome George, none have hatched so far.
