Treating Depression With Yoga
Everyone is bound to face issues that may make living uncomfortable.
Circumstances, past experiences, and present outcomes all contain
the triggers that may develop into depression. This mental disorder is
one of the most experienced mental issues. As a result of all these
triggers, depression creeps in, creating a constant feeling of
hopelessness and worthlessness. Depression can make you get fed up
with life and develop suicidal tendencies. The experience comes with
a chronic feeling of self-pity and guilt, and disinterest in what you once
enjoyed. Generally, depression is a mental issue that can alter your
physical, mental, and emotional well-being if not treated.
Several factors can be responsible for depression. These factors can
be categorized into personality, environmental, genetics,
biochemistry, and lifestyle factors. There is too much toxicity flying
around, and people can easily plunge into depression. As a result,
cases of depression continue to increase. The World Health
Organization recorded that about 264 million people globally
experience depression. While pills and medications are the go-to
treatments for depression, other alternatives have been discovered.
Many people have enrolled in counseling sessions to help them deal
with this medical disorder.
Research shows yoga can help people with depression. The clinical
trials conducted also point to this discovery. When combined with
yoga exercises, counseling can build strength in the body, which in
turn helps release depression symptoms.
Symptoms Of Depression In The Body
 Oversleeping or insomnia.
 Lack of interest in your hobbies and interests.
 Tiredness and loss of energy.
 Feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness.
 Feelings of shame and guilt
 Exhibiting distrust in people.
Yoga Treatment For Depression
 Meditation And Sleep
The mind is often the first place that is affected by depression. This
may lead to sleeplessness since the mind is disturbed and frustrated.
In essence, depression can affect the state of the sleep cycle called
REM. One solution to this is to practice meditative yoga. The essence
of this yoga is to cleanse and relax the mind, making you fall asleep
faster and sleep for a longer period. Meditative yoga contains gentle
movements that will align energies that can help relax your mind. You
get to enjoy a reasonable amount of sleep that will restore your body
and mind to normalcy while depression is reduced.
 Yoga Asanas
Apart from improving mindfulness, yoga helps the oxygen and blood
flow in the body. When you practice some yoga postures, you can
form balanced coordination between the mind and body, which clears
out negative thought patterns. There are some yoga asanas you can
practice to treat depression. They include Shavasana, shanurasana,
Sarvangasana, shashankasana, and malasana.
 Deep Or Yogic Breathing
Deep breathing releases pressure in the nervous system. It is an
exercise that stimulates the system and ensures the brain sends
signals that lift the mood from depression. Yogic breathing is
discovered to have an impact on your mental health and physical well-
being.
Depression can zap your energy and vitality. While there may be pills
and medication for depression, yoga also can be used. The mental
health benefits of yoga have proved to be a powerful treatment for
depression and anxiety.
