The 1931 Manchurian Incident saw Japanese forces seize control of Manchuria under false claims of an attack by Chinese bandits. In reality, rogue Japanese agents had staged the bombing of a railway to justify invasion. The boy hero Tintin discovers the true events in a Belgian cartoon, becoming embroiled in the Japanese invasion of China that the incident enabled.

1. 1931: News of the Manchurian Incident flashes around the globe, as imagined by the brilliant Belgian
cartoonist, Hergé. The Japanese propaganda version of the incident was false. Rogue Japanese agents,
not Chinese “bandits” had blown up the railway track, and there were no casualties. The cartoon strip’s
boy hero, Tintin, discovers the truth and becomes entangled in the Japanese invasion of China for which
the incident was a pretext.
