Speed Boat
If you haven't seen Dubai from the water, you haven't
really seen Dubai! The city’s fabulous skyline looks its best
when viewed from the waters, simply because you get a

on the water, The Yellow Boats (www.theyellowboats.com)

signed to manoeuvre with speed, a fun thrill no matter what

Dhow Cruises
The true character of Dubai lies in its effortless blend-
ing of the old with the new. The traditional dhow (wooden
sail boat) is a perfect example. A celebrated ancient mode of
marine transportation in the UAE, the dhow is one of today’s
most popular tourist attractions to study the many facets of
the city while gliding gently along its picturesque waterways.
There are many places and settings where you can catch a
dhow ride, from the commercial abras (ferryboats) used to
ferry people across the Dubai Creek to the more touristic
ones found at the waterways of modern souks and attrac-
tions.
If it’s more than just a cruise you seek, Al Boom Tour-
ist Village (www.alboomtouristvillage.ae) offers culinary
cruises aboard a range of large traditional dhows, on which
you can indulge yourself in a tasty open buffet while cruising
gracefully along the Dubai Creek.

As the capital city of the UAE, Abu Dhabi
is teeming with art and culture, but
that’s not all… if you have landed here
with 24 hours up your sleeve, this handy
itinerary will help you experience the
best the city has to offer – from dawn to
dusk.
Morning
9am-10am: Souq Qaryat Al Beri
Start the day by heading to Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat
Al Beri situated in al Maqta area of the city. Part of the ho-
tel’s complex is Souk Qaryat Al Beri. As you make your way
around the large hotel complex, the fascination heightens.
The hotel is connected by a winding waterway featuring tra-
ditional boats, known as abras. You lie back, utterly relaxed,
while the abra slowly meanders through verdant garden
scenery. The boat drops you at the hotel's souk, a contem-
porary adaptation of a typical Arabian market. Here, you’ll be
surrounded by a wide array of restaurants and cafés – most
of which offering stunning views of Sheikh Zayed Grand
Mosque – as well as many shops and stalls selling everything
from jewellery and accessories to clothes, perfumes, an-
tiques, furniture and carpets.
If you can’t decide at which café or restaurant to get
your most important meal of the day, then you might want
to try the ginger milk tea and a freshly baked butter bun at
Papparoti, which has captivated audiences all around the
country.
10am-11:30am: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Now that your stomach is sufficiently lined, it’s time
to head out to what most people would name as Abu Dha-
bi’s most important landmark, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
Known for its grandeur and majesty, the mosque was a
dream in the heart of the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al

Opened for worship in 2007, the mosque features
four minarets and eighty-two domes, representing different
Islamic styles. The mosque is also known for its diverse Islam-
ic architecture and pure white colour. White marble clads
the external walls and columns and features relief carving of
verses from Holy Quran and Islamic ornamentation.
Once you are done marvelling the grandeur of the
mosque, you may walk to the taxi designated area in the
north car park and hop into a cab to go to your next stop. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

12pm- 1:30pm: Etihad Towers
With five stunning towers that sparkle iridescently in
the never-ending sunshine, Etihad Towers is a reflection of
Abu Dhabi's modernity and regalness. Why should you visit
you might ask? The answer is to observe, not just the spar-
kly towers but the entirety of Abu Dhabi’s cityscape from
the Observation Deck at 300, located on the 74th floor of
Tower 2 at the Etihad Towers complex. Entrance for visitors
is AED75 (US$ 20.5), with AED 50 (US$ 13.6) redeemable as
food and beverage vouchers at the venue.
Now that you've worked up an appetite, it’s time for
lunch. At Etihad Towers there are 12 exquisite restaurants,
bars and lounges offering food from around the world, in-
cluding French, Japanese and contemporary Lebanese. What
more is there to say but bon appétit?! However, if you want
to try some local dishes, then you just might want to hold
off your hunger until you get to Emirates Place, located just
across the road from Etihad Towers.
1:30pm-3pm: Emirates Palace
A site to behold, Emirates Palace is the essence of pa-
latial yet traditional Arabic architecture and truly one of the
most inspiring hotels in Abu Dhabi. Built as a landmark show-
casing Arabian culture, the ultra-luxurious hotel features a
stunning main lobby with expansive marble floor and a large
patterned dome above, picked out in gold. The hotel also of-
fers a number of world class restaurants. Among them is Me-
zlai, a top choice for Emirati dining in Abu Dhabi. Mezlai is an
Arabic word meaning ‘the old lock of the door’, befitting the
classic ambient Arab décor that surrounds you as you recline
and dine in luxurious comfort. According to many within
the top echelons of the city’s business community, Mezlai is
the best Arabic restaurant in Abu Dhabi, serving a variety of
beautifully-cooked and elegantly-presented local dishes that
are made with the finest fresh ingredients.
3pm-5pm: Heritage Village
Having fed your body, it’s time to feed your soul, and
there’s no better place for some culture in Abu Dhabi than
Heritage Village. Run by the Emirates Heritage Club, the vil-
lage is an open museum that depicts a traditional Emirati vil-
lage, providing visitors with an interesting glimpse into the
emirate’s past. You will find it on the Corniche Breakwater
at close proximity to Emirates Palace. If the weather is good,
you can walk along the Corniche past the Marina Mall to get
there.
Traditional aspects of the desert way of life, including
a campfire with coffee pots, tents made of goat hair, and a
falaj irrigation system, are attractively displayed in the open
museum, while the little spice shop on site is a treat – you
can get a range of dried herbs, handmade soap and plenty
of chatter.
4pm-8pm: Yas Mall & Ferrari World
Soaked up the emirate’s history? Then now is time
to see its cool modern attractions. Jump into a taxi cab and
head to Yas Island to experience Abu Dhabi’s must visit vi-
brant shopping destination, Yas Mall. The mall serves is func-
tional gateway destination offering retail, entertainment and
dining, all under one roof. After whiling away a couple of

hours, make your way across the elevated footbridge inside
the mall to get to Ferrari World, the world’s first Ferrari-
branded indoor theme park. Home to an amazing mix of
Ferrari-inspired rides and attractions and the biggest Ferrari
Store in the region, this is a must-visit, but you probably need
to come back here again with more time to spend, unless
you don’t mind sparing AED350 on a ticket just to check the
place out and maybe, if you’re lucky, get to find a few rides
with queues that won’t burn the hours you have left of the
day.
Evening
8pm-10pm: Yas Marina
All that wandering around at the mall is thirsty work,
so now is the time to find a restaurant or a bar for some din-
ner, and the most vibrant place on the island for that is Yas
Marina. Featuring seven restaurants and bars with terraces
overlooking the Marina, this is the place to be on a cool,
breezy night.
Late-night
10pm-2am: Nightlife on Yas Island
If nightlife is your thing and you’re looking to continue
on clubbing, O1NE and Skylite on Yas Island are great shouts.
Located on the roof deck under the sensational light-filled
canopy of the Yas Viceroy hotel, Skylite is the perfect place
for indulging in cocktails and the rhythms of commercial
house music. On the other hand, O1NE Yas Island features
the world’s largest privately owned graffiti wall on the out-
side, while it’s inside space features an awesome a 360-de-
gree 3D projection mapping on the walls that can transport
guests from St.Tropez to outer space as they dance the night
away. These, among many other elements, make O1NE Yas
Island a landmark nightclub.

DUBAI
in
a Day
A day is nowhere near enough to discover the many delights of Dubai , but if that’s all the
time you’ve got, this specially designed itinerary will help you make the most of every hour.
Morning
8am-9:30am: Breakfast at XVA Café
Start your day at XVA Café. Located within XVA Art Ho-
tel in Al Fahidi Neighbroood, this cosy courtyard cafe offers
a range of Middle-Eastern-inspired breakfast options. Break-
fast is served from 7am to 9am, so make sure you make it
there on time.
9:30am-11am: Al Fahidi historical neighbourhood
After fuelling up at XVA Café, leave the hotel for a
stroll around the surrounding Al Fahidi neighbourhood. One
of the oldest communities in Dubai, the neighbourhood has
retained its traditional architecture and wind towers. How-
ever, the same can’t be said about its inhabitants; most of
the buildings have been converted to art galleries, cafes,
shops and government offices. If you’re eager for some in-
formation and history about the history of the locality, you
can make a pit stop at Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural
Understanding (House number 26) for answers and useful
tips. If not, you can try Basta Art Café for a refreshing drink
or Majlis Gallery for art.
11am-12pm: Dubai Museum
While in the area, don’t miss the Dubai Museum. The
museum is a reincarnation of what once was Al Fahidi Fort, a
garrison built in 1787. Today, the museum displays archaeo-
logical finds and traditional artefacts as well as multimedia
charting the city's progress through the decades.

Afternoon
12pm-2pm: Souk Madinat Jumeirah
As the sun gets higher in the sky, you’re going to want
to find some sheltre and while away the few more hours be-
fore lunchtime. Hail a cab and head to Souk Madinat Jumei-
rah, a unique shopping destination located in the heart of
Madinat Jumeirah, one of Dubai’s most luxurious Arabian-
style resorts. The souk is re-creation of an ancient Arabian
marketplace with a bazaar-like atmosphere. Here, you can
explore a myriad of meandering pathways hosting numer-
ous cafes, restaurants and bars, and shops selling a variety
of traditional wares and souvenirs.
2pm-3pm: Lunch at Al Qasr Hotel
When you are ready for your second meal of the day,
you can walk in for lunch at one of the various restaurants at
the souk, or, for something a little more extravagant, make
your way through the resort to Al Qasr Hotel, where the ho-
tel’s picturesque seafood restaurant Pierchic sits at the end
of its own pier, offering an over-the-water dining experience
unmatched anywhere in Dubai. Open for lunch and dinner,
Pierchic features à la carte menus of classics including oys-
ters, scallops, sashimi and lobster, as well as an array of fresh
fish.

3pm-4pm: Afternoon tea at Burj Al Arab
No trip to Dubai is complete without a visit to Burj Al
Arab, Dubai’s most iconic hotel. Yet for all the wonder this
stunning structure provides when you finally see it in person,
it’s all the more extraordinary on the inside. Repeatedly vot-
ed the world's most luxurious hotel, getting past the front
gate of Burj Al Arab isn’t an easy task. Unless you are stay-
ing at the hotel or have a reservations at one of its opulent
restaurants, your easiest ticket in is a reservation to the Af-
ternoon Tea (for AED 560 per person) at the hotel’s atrium
restaurant, Sahn Eddar, where you can indulge in sweet and
savoury afternoon tea menus of very best in the world.
4pm-6:00pm: Burj Khalifa & Dubai Mall
Once you are done savouring your afternoon tea at
Burj Al Arab, it’s time for you to see Dubai’s other iconic and
world-famous structure, the Burj Khalifa. Hard to miss from
almost anywhere in Dubai due to its sheer height, Burj Khali-
fa is perhaps best admired from its base in Downtown Dubai.
From here, you’re also footsteps away from The Dubai Mall,
the largest and most-visited mall in the world, combining
world-class shopping, dining, entertainment and leisure at-
tractions. With over 1,200 retail outlets, it’s easy to lose track
of time – and yourself.
If shopping is not your on list (although it should, amid
this unparalleled retail mix), there’s still plenty for you to see
and do at The Dubai Mall. First there’s the Dubai Aquarium &
Underwater Zoo, containing thousands of aquatic animals,
and then there’s the Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink. And for
those after great views of city, a flight to one of Burj Khalifa’s
observation decks ‘At The Top’ and ‘At The Top SKY’ (located
on the 124th floor and 138 floor respectively) is not to be
missed. You’ll be taking with you a fuller appreciation of this
architectural wonder and a deeper understanding of Dubai’s
remarkable vision.

A standard visit to At the Top lasts approximately 60
minutes, allowing ample time for you to relax and enjoy the
Dubai skyline at your leisure. Tickets may be purchased at the
ticket office near the entrance to At the Top on the lower
ground of The Dubai Mall.
Evening
6pm-6:30pm: Dubai Fountain
From inside The Dubai Mall, make your way to the
Dubai Fountain and prepare yourself to witness the out-
standing performance of this exhilarating water fountain.
Set on the Burj Khalifa Lake, the Dubai Fountain shoots mu-
sic-synchronised water jets as high as a 50-storey building. It
performs daily, with performance repertoire including Sama
Dubai; Baba Yetu, an award-winning song in Swahili; the
Arab world’s top-selling dance number Shik Shak Shok; and
the signature piece of world-renowned Italian tenor Andrea
Bocelli, Con te partiro (Time to Say Goodbye). Performances
are 30 minutes apart (from 6pm to 11pm).
6pm-9pm: Souk Al Bahar
Only after catching one of fountain’s performances
should you proceed across the footbridge over Burj Khalifa
Lake. The bridge will lead to Souk Al Bahar (‘market of the
sailor’), another arabesque shopping destination reminis-
cent of old bazars in the Middle East. Here, again, you are
left with choice of casual dining at the souk’s restaurants or
the fine dining options at The Palace Downtown Dubai hotel,
located next to the souk and connected to it through differ-
ent pathways. If the latter is your choice, Ewaan restaurant
at The Palace will whisk you away with a tempting blend of
Arabic and Oriental specialities, shisha and live music on the
terrace. Other dining options include Thai cuisine at Thiptara
and Argentinian grills at Asado.
Late Night
9pm-11pm: Neos Sky Lounge
Being in Downtown Dubai means you are surrounded
by many vibrant lounges and bars that offer good music and
great after-dinner cocktails. For the best views, we recom-
mend Neos Sky Lounge. Located on the 63rd floor of The
Address Downtown Hotel, this lounge is a destination venue
and a ‘must see’ if you’re looking to watch the radiant lights
of The Dubai Fountain from the perfect vantage point as you
groove to the resident DJ’s rhythmic mixes.
11pm-2am: Armani/Privé
If you are still standing and got what it takes to party
the night away, the best spot close to you for that is Armani/
Privé, one of Dubai’s trendiest after-hours destinations for vi-
brant DJ beats and fast-paced fun. Located at the lobby level
of Armani Hotel Dubai, inside Burj Khalifa, Armani/Privé ex-
udes in exclusivity, elegance and excellence, and envisages
a luxurious clubbing experience. Its slick, smooth black-and-
white décor encompasses a lounge area, a bar and a dance
floor where one can dance away into the early hours. Armani/
Privé is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10pm to 3am.

City of the Future… Today
As one of the world’s most sustainable cities, Masdar City
makes the world’s ‘Green Cities’ a reality – a must-see
attraction for the green tourist.
A city within a city, Masdar is Abu Dhabi’s ‘greenprint’
of a city of the future – a community where people live, work,
play and learn in an environment that pushes the boundaries
of sustainable design, construction and operation.
As you walk through Masdar City, you will notice its
progressive urban planning and eye-catching architecture
that combines traditional design principles with leading-
edge technology. One of these innovative design elements
is a huge central wind tunnel that channels a cooling breeze
through the streets and alleys, making it comfortable to
47
Issue 2016
stroll around even during high summer temperatures.
Masdar City is walkable and pedestrian friendly, inte-
grating a smart network of transportation options to create
an accessible, liveable community. Travelling into the City
can be done by different methods of low-carbon transporta-
tion. One of them is the super cool and emission-free Person-
al Rapid Transport (PRT) pods – small driverless electric cars.
Admission is free to the public who wish to explore Masdar
City. There is parking available in the covered car park at the
PRT station. From there, you can access the City via the PRT
cars that will take you directly into the heart of the City.
Whether you just want to wander the streets and mar-
vel at the unique architecture, relax at one of the many res-
taurants and coffee shops, or browse a convenience store or
the organic food shop, there is plenty to do and see. Here are
some of the things to discover in this futuristic city…
Traditional Design
As you walk through Masdar City, you will notice that
it looks both extremely modern and traditional. That’s be-
cause the City incorporates many passive design features
that don't require energy to deliver benefits. These features
have been used by urban dwellers in the region for millennia.
Some of these techniques are obvious, such as the window
shading, narrow spaces between buildings and colonnades.
Others are less so, such as the northwest-southeast orienta-
tion of the City’s streets, which optimises shading of streets
via building walls, and facilitates natural airflow throughout
the City.
48

Personal Rapid Transit (PRT)
The on-demand Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system
of electric-powered, automated, single-cabin driverless ve-
hicles which can seat up to 4 people, offers the privacy, com-
fort and non-stop travel of a taxi service, and the sustain-
ability of a shared public transport system. Operated using a
touch screen that sets the PRT in motion to your disembarka-
tion point, the vehicles run along PRT-only corridors. These
passenger cars run on a 1,700-metre track that passes from
the parking garage PRT station to the Masdar Institute PRT
station. The cars are controlled by computer and use sensors
to ensure nothing is in their path and to locate magnets that
have been embedded in the concrete floor every two me-
tres to help the vehicles navigate. An overhead leaky coaxial
cable antenna runs the length of the PRT corridors and pro-
vides a wireless link between the individual cars and the PRT
system computer.
The PRT Station
The PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) Station marks the
beginning of the Masdar City experience for most visitors.
The floors are constructed with prefabricated concrete
slabs that are manufactured offsite and fitted together on
site, dramatically reducing construction waste. Benches are
made of polished low-carbon concrete. Backlit recycled-glass
walls accent the PRT station entrance. Inside, the eye-catch-
ing glass-walled numeration of the PRT berths and multiple
smaller international numbers are embedded into the single
large Arabic numeral. The parking berths have recharging
panels in the floor, allowing vehicles to recharge while stand-
ing in the station.
Green Building Materials
As you rest on any of the benches across the City, note
that like other concrete used in the City these are made from
‘low-carbon’ concrete. This concrete has a significantly lower
environmental footprint because up to 40% of the energy-in-
tensive Portland cement is replaced with ground granulated
blast-furnace slag (GGBS), a waste product of iron making.
The use of this slag has resulted in concrete that is more resil-
ient against moisture and Abu Dhabi’s hypersaline soil. Most
of the aluminium used across Masdar City for sheeting, win-
dows and door frames, comprises 90% recycled aluminium, a
product that has one-eighth the carbon footprint of conven-
tional virgin aluminium sheeting. The use of this 90% recycled
aluminium is a regional first in the construction industry. All
timber is certified as sustainably sourced, while steel reinforc-
ing bars are made with recycled scrap. And what makes the
City more eco-friendly, is its heavily reduced need for energy
produced by fossil fuels, thus doing a good job in climate ac-
tion. A purpose-built 10-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant
and an array of building-mounted solar panels offset part of
the electricity needs in the current phase of Masdar City.
Students Residential Buildings
Masdar Institute’s residential buildings are defined
by the terracotta-coloured, undulating glass-reinforced con-
crete (GRC) balcony ‘screens’ that serve much the same role
as traditional Arabic mashrabiya screens. They provide shade
and privacy, while allowing air to pass through to cool the
balconies. Inside, these buildings have a central enclosed
atrium that naturally ventilates the common space for much
of the year. During the evening, cool air flows from vents
opened on the ground level, cooling the interior walls and
flowing out through open louvers at the top of the buildings.
49
Issue 2016
In warm weather, these openings are closed during the day
to keep cool air in. Walls cooled by the night air then pro-
vide thermal cooling to keep the interior hallways pleasant
throughout the day.
Knowledge Centre
One of the most distinctively shaped buildings in the
City, the oval-shaped roof of the institute’s Knowledge Cen-
tre reflects the designers’ efforts to optimise photovoltaic
(PV) energy harvesting through the building orientation and
the inclination of the PV panels on the roof’s curved surface.
The roof’s large self-shading overhang prevents direct sun-
light from causing heat gain inside, while still allowing natu-
ral light to illuminate study areas and providing a full wall of
glass that will look out over one of the City’s parks. Although
the glulam (glued laminated) timber structure is graceful and
beautiful, the reason it was chosen over steel was because
sustainable timber reduces the building’s embodied carbon
footprint. Covering the northeast section of the building’s
exterior roof, sustainable folded zinc cladding provides ven-
tilated shading to parts of the building and nearby public
spaces.
Masdar Wind Tower
Rising 45 metres above the plaza in which it stands,
the Masdar Wind Tower is a modern interpretation of one of
the region’s most iconic traditional architectural features. Its
height allows it to capture upper-level winds and direct them
to the open-air public square at its base. Sensors at the top
of the steel structure operate louvers to open in the direc-
tion of prevailing winds and to close in other directions to di-
vert wind down the tower. A PTFE (Teflon) fabric membrane
carries the wind downward, while mist generators at the top
further cool the air. This combination of evaporative cooling
and air movement helps to lower the perceived temperature
in the courtyard.
Siemens Middle East HQ
The Siemens Building is a LEED Platinum certified,
high-performance office building, whose unmistakable ex-
terior façade has been designed on the concept of a ‘box
within a box’. The inner ‘box’ is the highly insulated, airtight
wall that provides maximum insulation. Surrounding this is
the ‘outer’ box comprising a lightweight aluminium external
shadingsystemfeaturingfinsofvaryingforms.Theseprevent
excess solar heat from reaching the inner ‘box’ and warming
the building’s interiors, while maximising views and daylight.
The building, which is the company’s Middle East headquar-
ters, ‘floats’ above and shades a public plaza, whose funnel
shape accelerates prevailing winds underneath the building.
This flushes hot air out of the surrounding public spaces us-
ing natural air-flow dynamics. The atriums draw up the warm
ground-level air from the building’s plaza and expel it and al-
low natural daylight to permeate the interior office spaces.
Smart metering systems are deployed to monitor energy and
water use.
Incubator Building
The distinctive ultra-modern façade of them Incuba-
tor Building slopes outward as it rises in an effect that re-
duces solar gain by up to 63%. The use of ‘fritting’ on the
glass walls also keeps heat at bay yet still promotes diffused
natural lighting inside. Some exterior windows can be manu-
ally opened to provide natural ventilation of fresh air in
cooler weather to significantly reduce cooling requirements.
The design of walkways into the building’s open-air interior
courtyard helps to ‘lock in’ the cooler shaded air. Different
coloured fritting has been applied to different sections on
the facade. Higher up the building, the dots are bright yellow
and reflective, while ‘cooler’ colours are used towards the
building’s base.
Multi-use Hall
This sports building and performance hall features an
open-air swimming pool. Above the pool is an indoor gym
and a large multipurpose hall that is used for conferences
and sporting events. Ensuring accessible leisure and recre-
ational opportunities for workers, residents and visitors to
Masdar City is central to the sustainability objective of creat-
ing a viable work-life balance. That’s why streets and pub-
lic squares are intentionally designed to encourage sitting,
whether for a work or informal meeting, to read or simply
enjoy the weather. Cafes and restaurants benefit from the
City’s pleasant micro-climate, while future development
includes more open space such as parks, playgrounds and
sports fields. The unusual design choice of putting a build-
ing above an outdoor swimming pool optimises land use and
provides necessary shading to the pool.
IRENA HQ
The seven-storey, 32,000 square-metre complex com-
prises an atrium surrounded by three buildings and is home
to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
headquarters. The complex has a 1,000 square-metre roof-
top solar PV array that will meet 10% of the building’s electric-
ity requirement. The office building, the first in Abu Dhabi to
earn a 4 Pearl Estidama construction rating, reduces overall
energy demand by more than 60% compared to a baseline
non-Estidama building in Abu Dhabi. It also uses 54% less wa-
ter than a comparable structure, and 75% of its hot water de-
mand is heated on site with solar heaters. The complex was
constructed with advanced sustainable building materials,
such as low-carbon concrete, recycled aluminium and steel,
and FSC-certified timber. Melius restaurant, located on the
ground floor, offers mouth-watering cuisine ranging from
Arabic, Italian, Asian and other international dishes.
Digital Guestbook
The Masdar digital guestbook is an engaging and in-
teractive souvenir of your visit to Masdar City. Created by
American artist Joshua Davis, the guestbook invites you to
sign your name on the screen. Based on each signature, the
guestbook software uses randomisation to create a unique,
computer-generated art form that evokes a schematic ur-
ban planning map. The slower, more carefully you sign your
name, the better the resulting artwork. So be sure to take
your time. Once the design is created, the guestbook will
send a copy to your email.

Parks & Picnics
On the other end of the landscape spectrum, the UAE
has abundant parks and green spaces where visitors can take
a break from the hectic pace of the city and enjoy a picnic
on manicured lawns while being surrounded by a wonder-
ful range of opportunities to make the most of their leisure
time.
While most public parks offer children playgrounds,
shaded areas and other comfort amenities, some of these
verdant spots stand out above the rest by offering BBQ ar-
eas, kiosks, jogging tracks and body exercise machines – not
to mention free WiFi access. So whether you are looking for
a relaxing picnic on the grass or a refreshing jog, we invite
you to head to one of these green spaces, which will truly

perience, featuring special attractions such as the 100-meter-
high Sharjah Fountain, a kids area, landscaped gardens, and a
host of cafes, shops and restaurants.
Beaches
As the UAE is a seaside country, it’s obvious that one
of its strong points is an ample supply of beaches. But while
there is an open beach almost everywhere you look along
the cost, you run the risk of landing on one with no lifeguard
on duty. Moreover, some of these undesignated beaches
lack facilities such as showers, toilets and refreshment stalls.
That is why you’ll be better off going to one of the more
populated beaches which have evolved to become friendlier
to their frequenters. If you plan to hit the turquoise waters
on your visit to the UAE, here are a few beaches you should

  • 46. 46 Tourist | Tours & Attractions City of the Future… Today As one of the world’s most sustainable cities, Masdar City makes the world’s ‘Green Cities’ a reality – a must-see attraction for the green tourist. A city within a city, Masdar is Abu Dhabi’s ‘greenprint’ of a city of the future – a community where people live, work, play and learn in an environment that pushes the boundaries of sustainable design, construction and operation. As you walk through Masdar City, you will notice its progressive urban planning and eye-catching architecture that combines traditional design principles with leading- edge technology. One of these innovative design elements is a huge central wind tunnel that channels a cooling breeze through the streets and alleys, making it comfortable to
  • 47. 47 Issue 2016 stroll around even during high summer temperatures. Masdar City is walkable and pedestrian friendly, inte- grating a smart network of transportation options to create an accessible, liveable community. Travelling into the City can be done by different methods of low-carbon transporta- tion. One of them is the super cool and emission-free Person- al Rapid Transport (PRT) pods – small driverless electric cars. Admission is free to the public who wish to explore Masdar City. There is parking available in the covered car park at the PRT station. From there, you can access the City via the PRT cars that will take you directly into the heart of the City. Whether you just want to wander the streets and mar- vel at the unique architecture, relax at one of the many res- taurants and coffee shops, or browse a convenience store or the organic food shop, there is plenty to do and see. Here are some of the things to discover in this futuristic city… Traditional Design As you walk through Masdar City, you will notice that it looks both extremely modern and traditional. That’s be- cause the City incorporates many passive design features that don't require energy to deliver benefits. These features have been used by urban dwellers in the region for millennia. Some of these techniques are obvious, such as the window shading, narrow spaces between buildings and colonnades. Others are less so, such as the northwest-southeast orienta- tion of the City’s streets, which optimises shading of streets via building walls, and facilitates natural airflow throughout the City.
  • 48. 48 Tourist | Tours & Attractions Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) The on-demand Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system of electric-powered, automated, single-cabin driverless ve- hicles which can seat up to 4 people, offers the privacy, com- fort and non-stop travel of a taxi service, and the sustain- ability of a shared public transport system. Operated using a touch screen that sets the PRT in motion to your disembarka- tion point, the vehicles run along PRT-only corridors. These passenger cars run on a 1,700-metre track that passes from the parking garage PRT station to the Masdar Institute PRT station. The cars are controlled by computer and use sensors to ensure nothing is in their path and to locate magnets that have been embedded in the concrete floor every two me- tres to help the vehicles navigate. An overhead leaky coaxial cable antenna runs the length of the PRT corridors and pro- vides a wireless link between the individual cars and the PRT system computer. The PRT Station The PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) Station marks the beginning of the Masdar City experience for most visitors. The floors are constructed with prefabricated concrete slabs that are manufactured offsite and fitted together on site, dramatically reducing construction waste. Benches are made of polished low-carbon concrete. Backlit recycled-glass walls accent the PRT station entrance. Inside, the eye-catch- ing glass-walled numeration of the PRT berths and multiple smaller international numbers are embedded into the single large Arabic numeral. The parking berths have recharging panels in the floor, allowing vehicles to recharge while stand- ing in the station. Green Building Materials As you rest on any of the benches across the City, note that like other concrete used in the City these are made from ‘low-carbon’ concrete. This concrete has a significantly lower environmental footprint because up to 40% of the energy-in- tensive Portland cement is replaced with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), a waste product of iron making. The use of this slag has resulted in concrete that is more resil- ient against moisture and Abu Dhabi’s hypersaline soil. Most of the aluminium used across Masdar City for sheeting, win- dows and door frames, comprises 90% recycled aluminium, a product that has one-eighth the carbon footprint of conven- tional virgin aluminium sheeting. The use of this 90% recycled aluminium is a regional first in the construction industry. All timber is certified as sustainably sourced, while steel reinforc- ing bars are made with recycled scrap. And what makes the City more eco-friendly, is its heavily reduced need for energy produced by fossil fuels, thus doing a good job in climate ac- tion. A purpose-built 10-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant and an array of building-mounted solar panels offset part of the electricity needs in the current phase of Masdar City. Students Residential Buildings Masdar Institute’s residential buildings are defined by the terracotta-coloured, undulating glass-reinforced con- crete (GRC) balcony ‘screens’ that serve much the same role as traditional Arabic mashrabiya screens. They provide shade and privacy, while allowing air to pass through to cool the balconies. Inside, these buildings have a central enclosed atrium that naturally ventilates the common space for much of the year. During the evening, cool air flows from vents opened on the ground level, cooling the interior walls and flowing out through open louvers at the top of the buildings.
  • 49. 49 Issue 2016 In warm weather, these openings are closed during the day to keep cool air in. Walls cooled by the night air then pro- vide thermal cooling to keep the interior hallways pleasant throughout the day. Knowledge Centre One of the most distinctively shaped buildings in the City, the oval-shaped roof of the institute’s Knowledge Cen- tre reflects the designers’ efforts to optimise photovoltaic (PV) energy harvesting through the building orientation and the inclination of the PV panels on the roof’s curved surface. The roof’s large self-shading overhang prevents direct sun- light from causing heat gain inside, while still allowing natu- ral light to illuminate study areas and providing a full wall of glass that will look out over one of the City’s parks. Although the glulam (glued laminated) timber structure is graceful and beautiful, the reason it was chosen over steel was because sustainable timber reduces the building’s embodied carbon footprint. Covering the northeast section of the building’s exterior roof, sustainable folded zinc cladding provides ven- tilated shading to parts of the building and nearby public spaces. Masdar Wind Tower Rising 45 metres above the plaza in which it stands, the Masdar Wind Tower is a modern interpretation of one of the region’s most iconic traditional architectural features. Its height allows it to capture upper-level winds and direct them to the open-air public square at its base. Sensors at the top of the steel structure operate louvers to open in the direc- tion of prevailing winds and to close in other directions to di- vert wind down the tower. A PTFE (Teflon) fabric membrane carries the wind downward, while mist generators at the top further cool the air. This combination of evaporative cooling and air movement helps to lower the perceived temperature in the courtyard. Siemens Middle East HQ The Siemens Building is a LEED Platinum certified, high-performance office building, whose unmistakable ex- terior façade has been designed on the concept of a ‘box within a box’. The inner ‘box’ is the highly insulated, airtight wall that provides maximum insulation. Surrounding this is the ‘outer’ box comprising a lightweight aluminium external shadingsystemfeaturingfinsofvaryingforms.Theseprevent excess solar heat from reaching the inner ‘box’ and warming the building’s interiors, while maximising views and daylight. The building, which is the company’s Middle East headquar- ters, ‘floats’ above and shades a public plaza, whose funnel shape accelerates prevailing winds underneath the building. This flushes hot air out of the surrounding public spaces us- ing natural air-flow dynamics. The atriums draw up the warm ground-level air from the building’s plaza and expel it and al- low natural daylight to permeate the interior office spaces. Smart metering systems are deployed to monitor energy and water use. Incubator Building The distinctive ultra-modern façade of them Incuba- tor Building slopes outward as it rises in an effect that re- duces solar gain by up to 63%. The use of ‘fritting’ on the glass walls also keeps heat at bay yet still promotes diffused natural lighting inside. Some exterior windows can be manu- ally opened to provide natural ventilation of fresh air in cooler weather to significantly reduce cooling requirements. The design of walkways into the building’s open-air interior courtyard helps to ‘lock in’ the cooler shaded air. Different coloured fritting has been applied to different sections on the facade. Higher up the building, the dots are bright yellow and reflective, while ‘cooler’ colours are used towards the building’s base. Multi-use Hall This sports building and performance hall features an open-air swimming pool. Above the pool is an indoor gym and a large multipurpose hall that is used for conferences and sporting events. Ensuring accessible leisure and recre- ational opportunities for workers, residents and visitors to Masdar City is central to the sustainability objective of creat- ing a viable work-life balance. That’s why streets and pub- lic squares are intentionally designed to encourage sitting, whether for a work or informal meeting, to read or simply enjoy the weather. Cafes and restaurants benefit from the City’s pleasant micro-climate, while future development includes more open space such as parks, playgrounds and sports fields. The unusual design choice of putting a build- ing above an outdoor swimming pool optimises land use and provides necessary shading to the pool. IRENA HQ The seven-storey, 32,000 square-metre complex com- prises an atrium surrounded by three buildings and is home to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) headquarters. The complex has a 1,000 square-metre roof- top solar PV array that will meet 10% of the building’s electric- ity requirement. The office building, the first in Abu Dhabi to earn a 4 Pearl Estidama construction rating, reduces overall energy demand by more than 60% compared to a baseline non-Estidama building in Abu Dhabi. It also uses 54% less wa- ter than a comparable structure, and 75% of its hot water de- mand is heated on site with solar heaters. The complex was constructed with advanced sustainable building materials, such as low-carbon concrete, recycled aluminium and steel, and FSC-certified timber. Melius restaurant, located on the ground floor, offers mouth-watering cuisine ranging from Arabic, Italian, Asian and other international dishes. Digital Guestbook The Masdar digital guestbook is an engaging and in- teractive souvenir of your visit to Masdar City. Created by American artist Joshua Davis, the guestbook invites you to sign your name on the screen. Based on each signature, the guestbook software uses randomisation to create a unique, computer-generated art form that evokes a schematic ur- ban planning map. The slower, more carefully you sign your name, the better the resulting artwork. So be sure to take your time. Once the design is created, the guestbook will send a copy to your email.
