Totalitarianism is a very controlling form of government ruled by dictators with limited communication. It encompasses fascist, communist, and Nazi regimes. Fascism is based on nationalism and a central authority, unlike communism which advocates collective property ownership. Under Stalin, nearly impossible 5-year plans were used to collectivize farming, imprisoning those who failed. Stalin also had Trotsky murdered and carried out the Great Purges to eliminate potential threats. Hitler initially tried to overthrow the Weimar Republic through the Beer Hall Putsch and later used the Reichstag fire to weaken the government and become Chancellor of Germany.
