Tone refers to the degree of lightness or darkness in an area, ranging from bright white to deepest black. An object's perceived tone depends on its surface properties, lightness, darkness, color, and texture. Students are assigned to complete two sustained tonal drawings using a range of values, a page on an artist who works in black and white using tonal range, and optional observational tonal drawings in their sketchbook using various media.
