Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Review
– Fantastically ‘Sick’
REFRESHING THE MEMORIES OF 30 YEARS AGO, THE TALKING
GREEN TEEN TURTLES ARE BACK IN ACTION WITH TURTLE-
TASTIC MANIA, COMICAL MOMENTS AND BROTHERHOOD.
24 years after the first movie to start the TMNT franchise, it looks like Hollywood needs to make space
yet for another blockbuster hit. This is time it is twice the action and bigger the turtles.
Recently released film ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ makes sure to give the audience a moment to
spare,to recollect their memories on the four turtles and their ninja abilities. Going back to 1990, the
original movie smashed the box office and became the second highest grossing independent film of all
time. It was the most successfulmovie in the franchise until the 2014 reboot. Originally teenage mutant
ninja turtles were a comic phenomenon, beginning the franchise with a hit movie in 90’s to Television
series on Nickelodeon to huge blockbuster movies. This is only the beginning of the new edition of the
ninja turtles.
Who doesn’t love pizza eating turtles, which have been bought up in a New York Sewage and has ninja
skills. The realaspect of the movie was the brotherhood. Even though each turtle is their own, yet they
fought as a team. This ‘Cowbanga’ movie is sure to reach out all generation, also inviting new fans to
watch fighting turtles in New York City. The stereotypically aims at teenage boys who love a bit of action
pack sequences, however it felt like little kids aged 10 would love to watch the nearly scary looking
turtles.
Set in New York City, the movie opens with April O’Neil played by Megan Fox, who is researching a
gang going by the name ‘Foot Clan’ who has gradually beginning to terrorise the city. As an ambitious
journalist to find every inch of detail about this gang, she witnesses the Foot Clan unloading a cargo, but
before she hit the record footage, a shadowy figure arrives and in the speed of lightening, it takes down
one by one. The next day, April explains to her boss about the situation, but no one believes her.
As the story slowly progresses, there is another attack at a subway station none other than the Foot Clan.
April notices it and rushes to scene, hoping to encounter the vigilante. Despite the effort of trying to
search for the vigilante, she ends up becoming a hostage. The heroes are introduced 17 minutes in,
watching different screens of CCTV footage of the subway attack, also featuring a comical moment of a
‘cat playing chopstick with chopstick’ which was partially more interesting than watching turtles looking
at screens. The four teenage turtles attack and eases the situation, but the stubborn April O’Neil doesn’t
give up, she follows the four vigilantes to a rooftop and takes pictures of them. The vigilantes, Leonardo,
Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael notice her and demand her to give them the camera. The story is
similar to the original however more action sequences tense up the atmosphere.
The down side of the movie is the plot line. It’s too slow and can easily make you lose track. There are
obvious clues on who is behind the Foot Clan and the big attack in New York City. The movie doesn’t
take shortcuts to the final goal but takes a longer route and halts at every traffic light.
The real hard work behind the movie has to be the CGI team. Technology has not only made the movie
feel realistic, but has given the turtles an updated appearance. Motion-Capture performance was used to
enrapture the fighting and then use specialist skills to create a humanoid mutant turtle.
Since opening with mixed reactions in the US, the film performed impressively with $25.6 million. In its
first weekend, TMNT opened in first place with $65.6 million which surpassed Paramount and box
office’s analysts’ predictions of a $40 to $45 million opening. The movie is more achievable by becoming
the fourth highest weekend debut for the month of August. Overall, the movie achieved well in both the
US and internationally, a total box office of $477.2 million. A lot of hard work as ben paid off by the
effects/CGI team.
In contrast with the grand box office earnings, the movie did not impress most critics. There was a lack of
thrill and didn’t meet the expectations of the critics.
