Ten Tipperary towns have been ap-proved
a package of supports under
the interim Retail Support Pro-gramme.
Beneficiaries under the
€25,000 fund include; Cahir Tidy
Towns, Carrick on Suir Business
Association, Clonmel Chamber,
Fethard Business & Tourism Ltd.,
Holycross Forum, Nenagh Chamber
of Commerce, Roscrea Chamber,
Thurles Chamber, Tipperary Inte-grated
Resource Development and
Killenaule Town Enhancement.
The scheme administered by Tipper-ary
County Council’s Local Enter-prise
Office targeted Chambers,
Business Associations and Commu-nity
Groups and offered a series of
measures to help regain the commer-cial
viability of retail businesses and
to safeguard both new and existing
jobs in the County’s retail sector.
Under the scheme, towns and villag-es
were offered a grant of €1,000
towards eligible marketing and PR
activities, an “outside broadcast”
with local radio stations Tipp FM or
Tipp Mid West in addition to the
services of a Mentor- Red PR to as-sist
with the formulation of a
marketing/PR plan for the partici-pating
town or village.
In addition, through Chambers and
Traders Associations across Tipper-ary,

offering the sector, training, mentor-ing,
management development, up-skilling
in social media,e-commerce
solutions and On Line Trading
Vouchers, GIBO (Getting Irish
Business On Line) and other sup-ports
for businesses who lack a web
presence, text or other scheme to
attract new, retain existing custom-ers
and encourage increased spend
in Tipperary’s towns and villages
The Retail Support Programme is
the first phase in the roll out of a se-ries
of supports by Tipperary County
Council and Tipperary Local Enter-prise
Office under the “Town Centre
Initiative”. A Study of the retail sec-tor
in 2012 identified common ac-tions
that could be pursued and are
relevant to all key towns and villag-es
reviewed. Actions included the
establishment of a town centre fo-rum,
revitalisation of vacant and der-elict
properties/shop units, use of
social media/web sites/town shop-ping
apps, promoting the concept of
“Shop Local”, provision of tailored
training courses to meet the needs of
retailers such as customer relation-ship
management, brand identity,
PR, festivals and events, enhancing
links with tourism, developing farm-ers
markets and new collective mar-keting
initiatives designed to
increase foot fall and spend in the
County.
This interim Retail Support Pro-gramme
will be evaluated and bene-ficiaries
are obliged to submit a
post- event report detailing the im-pact
of the Initiative in the Town/
Village such as foot-fall, spend, sat-isfaction
rating, employment
created/maintained (direct and indi-rect),
collaboration/ joint initiatives
with Municipal Districts, new initia-tives/
events introduced and commu-nity
participation.

on the vital tradition
of John B Keane’s work
in telling the stories of a
disappearing Ireland, ac-cording
to the Kerry au-thor’s
son, Billy.
“In a writing sense, PJ
Cunningham is a son of
my father,” said Billy
Keane at the book’s
launch in Dublin on
Thursday night.
“This book bears witness to a time
and place where, after centuries of
traditional ways, the people experi-enced
rapid change into a modern
society between the fifties and seven-ties
“It was a time when the comely
maidens made way for their more
modern sisters in stilettos and mini-skirts
walking past the village green
in a society shelving the skin of reli-gion
and superstition,” explained
Keane, who launched the book in
Dubray Bookshop on Grafton Street.

in The Long Acre fo-cus
on the often-hero-ic
struggles within
ordinary lives as peo-ple
aspired to a better
way in and around the
smallholdings of the
country.
It was a world where
the new rural electrifi-cation
scheme shone
lights into the darkest
corners of the country – a process
that was repeated on an intellectual
and emotional level among a matur-ing
population through the following
decades.
The book is a slice of recent history,
capturing the fears and aspirations of
a people forced to take new direc-tions
at the crossroads between old
and modern Ireland.
The stories in this collection look at
the fallout as these two worlds collid-ed
within communities and the
church.
Just Been Summonsed To Court?
Don't Panic, Read This....
For over 100,000 homeowners in arrears and
their partners, being served a summons to
court by the bank is the moment they have
been dreading most. So many homeowners
have been sticking their heads in the sand,
hoping and praying for a knight in shining ar-mour
that will save them from homelessness.
The penny drops however when that knock
comes to the door, often in the evening time,
and the unsuspecting homeowner is handed
the summons by a stranger. Its a moment
when even the hardest of people, muscle-bound
bruisers, turn to jelly, and the most pos-itive
people in life are overcome with shock,
anxiety and depression. Physically, the heart-beat
revs to palpitations, many have reported
to us shortness of breathe, nausea and trem-bling.
These reactions are the release of pent up
anxiety, often building over a number of
years, as worst fears are realised. It isn't pent
up emotions alone that bring about such reac-tions
when handed a summons for a civil bill
application by the bank. One of the main con-tributors
is, believe it or not, ignorance, a lack
of knowledge regarding what the summons is
and what it means.
If you, like scores of thousands, have fallen
into arrears on your mortgage, it is likely that
you believe you will have no options other
than to eventually hand in your keys or go to
court to lose it sooner rather than later. This is
in reality far from the case. If a home owner
decides they wish to defend themselves hav-ing
received a summons to court they can be
guaranteed, with a little knowledge, to remain
in their home for years to come. If you have
recently been served with a summons to the
Circuit Court, here's a few starting facts that
will put your mind at ease and allow you a
good night's sleep. The facts and court defence
tactics outlined below do not present a silver
bullet but rather will gain you significant
amounts of time during which the Land
League aims to build a national campaign to
end evictions and achieve an across the board
write-down on home mortgage debt.
1. When you go to the Circuit Court for the
first time you will be in front of the County
Registrar. The Registrar is not a Judge. The
Registrar is almost like a gate-keeper, and it is
his/her job to make sure everything required
for a case is present before sending the case to
the "Judges List". If you do not present a de-fence
the Registrar will make an Order for
Possession of your home.
2. On your first appearance the Court Regis-trar
cannot make any decision, whether that be
to send the case to the Judges list; grant the
Bank its application for Possession; or even
strike the case out with a right to re-apply. Be-cause
the Registrar can do nothing on the first
sitting, we advise homeowners to say very lit-tle.
An adjournment will be given automatical-ly
by the Registrar with a date to return.
Currently adjournments are for between two
months and four months in the Circuit Courts
and extending all the time.
3. On the second appearance before the Regis-trar
he/she has the authority (according to their
own understanding of the constitution) to take
an action, such as sending the case to the
Judge's list etc. We advise at this stage that
you attend the court with a short affidavit (a
document stating facts you wish to tell the
Judge in your defence). Do not present the af-fidavit
immediately, but rather play for more
time. Achieving adjournments throughout the
court process is a core objective of our court
strategy, keeping people in their home for as
long as possible. A number of reasons to seek
an adjournment at this second sitting include
(a) I have applied for legal aide and await a
decision, (b) I have recently sent a letter to the
bank regarding negotiations and I await a re-sponse
(do send such a letter one week before
the second sitting), (c) I have made an ap-pointment
to obtain legal advice and ask for
an adjournment. Similar reasons can be given
to seek more time. Remember you are a lay-litigant
and as such will receive more lee-way
than a trained solicitor.
4. If the Registrar insists on you presenting a
defence, then you may use the affidavit. The
Affidavit can contain any form a defence, but
make sure it states clearly that it is not your
"full, final and perfected defence", but rather
only serves to meet the requirement of having
some sort of defence to send up to the judges
list. Saying "I am trying my best" is not a de-fence.
A defence must in some way refute the
allegations of the bank. At this stage the affi-davit
should not be detailed. The affidavit may
refer to the fact that the mortgage was securi-tised;
that the interest rates claimed by the
Plaintiff (that's the bank) are incorrect; that the
mortgage was misrepresented to you, or a host
of other Prima Facie (on the face of it) defenc-es.
Only use one or two and remember, its not
the Registrar's job to decide on the merits of
your defence, his/her job is simply to move it
to the Judge's list.
5. If your requests for an adjournment at the
second sitting have not been successful and
your case has been moved to the Judges list,
this does not mean you will be up in front of a
Judge that day. Instead the case will be ad-journed
again and you will once more be be-fore
the registrar in two/three/four/ months
time. At this stage the Registrar will ensure
that all parties wish to continue and that eve-rything
is in place for a trial. Another adjourn-ment
will be given and a date set for the
Judge's list. This sitting in the Registrar's court
may provide more opportunities to delay and
seek an adjournment.
6. If and when you finally appear before a Cir-cuit
Court Judge it is only for "mention", in
other words the Judge will want to know,
more months having passed, if both parties
wish to proceed. This is where the real delay-ing
can begin, where you can put the bank on
the back foot by seeking discovery (the release
of documentary evidence from the bank) and
many other tactics. The Judge will set another
date to return to mention the case again and
find out if your reasons for delay have been
satisfied and if so, a date can be given for
hearing. If not, more adjournments can be re-quested.
We at the Land league hope that the above
information has put your mind at ease in this
holiday season. As you can see, before one
word is spoken to a Judge or the matters dis-cussed
in Court, you can delay the process by
up to two years. When the case actually begins
further delay is easily achieved, and all the
time we are building outside the courts a na-tional
movement for fair mortgage repay-ments.
By knowing and using your rights your
home can remain a sanctuary for you and your
family for years to come, and hopefully for as
long as you desire.

Mary T Keane first
trained as a teacher in
England, pursued that
profession there and
then returned to Ireland.
Her abiding interest was
however in health and
fitness. In her research
about natural health, she
studied the writings of
both medical and natu-ral
health experts.
Dr Jarvis an American medical doc-tor
come believer in folk medicine
and Dr Lelord Kordel, the famous
American dietician are among her
favourite writers on health. Her stud-ies
prompted her to write four books
on natural health. One of these was
named ‘Research your Health’. This
her 5th book is a re-edition of that
book, which is now entitled ‘Natural
Health Through Wiser Living’.
Though slightly different in content
to the original, the principles are the
same as ‘Research your Health’
which was for a time among the
‘best sellers’ in Easons.
Mary attributes her
success at that time,
over 20 years ago to
the recommendation of
the famous Gay Byrne
on his Morning Radio
Show. When she ap-proached
Easons ini-tially
asking if they
would be interested in
stocking the book, she
mentioned Gay’s fa-vourable
comments on
it. The book buyer Sally’s response
with ‘Oh, if Gay said it, that’s
enough’ left her in doubt about the
outcome.
And now more than 20 years later
Mary has felt compelled to re-edit
the book and to pass on a few secrets
of natural health which she has
learned along the way. However, she
believes that this book could be of
benefit to persons seeking a route to
natural health, or perhaps who could
help their bodies heal naturally. The
reader is left to ‘research’ his/her
health in this book ‘Natural Health
Through Wiser Living’. The book is

There’s nothing quite like festive food
to tempt us into the Christmas mood!
This Christmas Time, we highlight how
easy it is to include dairy as part of a
balanced diet - be it in cooking or bak-ing,
or as part of delicious meals and
snacks.
Three servings from the ‘milk, yogurt
and cheese’ food group are recom-mended
as part of balanced diet each
day (including Christmas day!), and
this increases to five daily servings be-tween
the ages of 9-18 years. Examples
of one serving include 200ml milk,
125ml yogurt or 25g cheddar-type
cheese, with low-fat options advised.
Tasty choices to help you achieve your
recommended intake from this food
group include:
· Milk-based soups and sauces
with seasonal vegetables
· Potato gratin made with milk and
cheese
· Irish cheese board with a selec-tion
of crackers
· Mug of warm milk or a hot choc-olate
treat
· Turkey sambos with cranberry
sauce and grated cheddar/ Irish brie
· Porridge made with milk with a
sprinkle of cinnamon
· Stewed fruit with cinnamon and
nutmeg served with low-fat custard/
yogurt
· Rice pudding made using low-fat
milk with dried fruit
Controlling Christmas
Calories!
T’is the season for temptation - whether
it’s the circulating hors d’oeuvres at a
work party, or that after dinner tin of
chocolates! And while indulging in a
treat now and then shouldn’t be
frowned upon, we need to remember
the importance of having a healthy, bal-anced
diet so that we ensure to con-sume
the nutrients we need for good
health.
The Department of Health's Food Pyra-mid
provides healthy eating guidance
for adults and children over the age of
five years. Foods are categorised into
six different groups with guidelines on
the number of servings to be eaten from
each food group on a daily basis. It is
advised to choose a variety of foods
from each of the bottom four shelves
every day to get a good range of vita-mins
and minerals, limiting foods from
the top shelf which are high in fat, sug-ar
and salt. Further details on the Food

Some Tips Include:
Staying mindful of portion sizes – es-pecially
for treat foods with high sugar
and/or fat contents. Try sharing a
Christmas cake slice or having a ‘treat’
size chocolate bar, rather than full por-tions.
Choosing healthier side orders such as
seasonal vegetables when eating out.
Snacking on healthier festive alterna-tives
such as fruit and yogurt with a
sprinkle of cinnamon, or unsalted nuts.
Festive Fitness
The National Guidelines for Physical
Activity recommend that adults exer-cise
at a moderate level for at least 30
minutes a day on 5 days a week (or 150
minutes per week), while children and
young people (aged 2-18 years) need at
least 60 minutes of moderate to vigor-ous
activity every day.
Regular physical activity is equally im-portant
during the Christmas season as
it is at any other time of the year - so
there’s no excuse to cut out exercise! In
fact, the Christmas holidays offer the
perfect opportunity to include fun fit-ness
activities into your day. Wrap up –
and catch up - on a winter’s walk with
family or friends. Pop on some festive
tunes and rock around that Christmas
tree, or appreciate the fresh air before
some hectic shopping by getting off the
bus a stop or two early.

A cheque from the proceeds of the recent Westport Charity Challenge
weekend was presented by Brid Ryan Burke of Mid-Tipp Hillwalkers
club to Maggie Horan, who accepted it on behalf of Milford Care Cen-tre.
Magie Horan hails from Terryglass and works as hospice nurse for
Milford Care Centre providing palliative care services to patients who
are thus enabled to remain in their own homes when seriously ill. This
service is entirely funded by voluntary donations from the general pub-lic.

It is that time of the year again
when it is the wonder of seeing the
excitement and joy on the face of a
child as he opens his Christmas
presents that enthralls us. There is
however, one gift, we hope will not
be under the Christmas Tree this
year, and that is a puppy or kitten.
The Tipperary Friends of Animals
want to remind everyone that pup-pies
and kittens are a lifetime com-mitment.
They are living creatures
who feel joy and sorrow in exactly
the same way that people do and
when they are abandoned after a
few months, it is a heartbreaking
experience to the animals who
don’t understand what has hap-pened.
Anyone considering getting a pet,
should first look into the cost of
keeping a pet, especially in today’s
financial climate. A decent pet
food can be expensive and vaccina-tions
and vets bills would certainly
put a dent in anyone’s pocket.
Then there is the kennelling fees for
when the holiday time is around.
Having said all that, pets are won-derful
to have around a home and
you can be assured of no greater
friend, but just like a friend, a com-mitment
has to be made to keep
them for life.

Anxiety. Generalised Anxiety
Disorder (GAD). Criteria for GAD.
So far, in what has been a long
introduction, I have discussed anxiety
in many contexts, looking at physical,
psychological and behavioural
symptoms. I have explored what
might cause anxiety, and charted
some measures that help alleviate this
distressing condition. In that context I
have outlined some points about
progressive relaxation exercises and
visualisation, made some suggestions
about nutrition, mentioned some
books that are helpful, given you
some simple measures of self-care,
and explained the link between
sleeplessness and anxiety. I took this
approach because of how long this
series of articles on anxiety will go on
for, and I wanted you to have some
means of dealing with it. As the series
progresses, I will continue with
specific forms of anxiety, phobias and
panic, and much of what I have said
in relation to easing anxiety will be
repeated in relation to these specific
types of anxiety.
I want to look at what is called
Generalised Anxiety Disorder
(GAD), which is closely related to
what I have already been writing
about. However, this will give further
insight into it.
GAD is a severe anxiety that is not
connected to any specific thing, and it
can be accompanied by other
complaints such as depression and
addictions. Research shows that
depression is the most common
mental complain that accompanies
GAD. It is estimated in some studies
that between 6% and 10% suffer from
GAD.
Being constantly anxious can clearly
make a person depressed and
exhausted, and addiction can be seen
as an unhealthy method of getting
away from the anxious feelings.
When we are actively indulging in
our addiction we are in a bubble of
comfort, and are disconnected.
Therefore, treating the accompanying
complaints is important before
dealing with the anxiety. Sometimes
this is done with medication while the
sufferer is in counselling. If the
sufferer has a drug or alcohol
addiction these must receive priority.
General counselling should not
begin until at least two years after
the addict has abstained from the
substance.
Generalised Anxiety Disorder can
begin in one’s youth, but its onset is
generally in the 20s and 30s. It seems
to be most common among the
elderly. Research does not show any
particular stressor causing this painful
complaint, but there is a minor
genetic factor in it. It must last for 6
months to be classed as generalised
anxiety disorder, and must have three
of the following six symptoms –
being irritable or angry, suffering
from fatigue, being tense or restless,
having trouble sleeping, being tense
in the body, and not being able to
concentrate. If these symptoms exist
to the extent that they seriously
interfere with the quality of our life
then we have Generalised Anxiety
Disorder.
GAD is very widespread and
researchers now feel that it is as
widespread as depression. This
excessive anxiety can be triggered off
by anything, and sufferers worry
about things that will never happen.
They are so consumed by worry that
this anxiety builds up to the point
where they find it impossible to
concentrate. People who suffer from
generalised anxiety find it hard to let
go of any negative thought, and their
worry might be continuous for days.
Anxiety feels like fear, but fear is
about a specific object, person or
event, whereas those with general
anxiety do not know what they are
anxious about. Imagine the impact
this has on a student in the rigid
confines of the classroom, or vainly
trying to concentrate on doing
homework.
