2. TIME
 Time is a dimension in which events can be ordered from
the past through the present into the
future,[1][2][3][4][5][6] and also the measure of durations
of events and the intervals between them.[3][7][8] Time
has long been a major subject of study in religion,
philosophy, and science, but defining it in a manner
applicable to all fields without circularity has consistently
eluded scholars.[3][7][8][9][10][11] Nevertheless, diverse
fields

3.  such as business, industry, sports, the sciences, music,
dance, and the live theater all incorporate some notion of
time into their respective measuring systems.[12][13][14]
Some simple, relatively uncontroversial definitions of time
include "time is what clocks measure"[7][15] and "time is
what keeps everything from happening at
once".[16][17][18][19]

4. การบอกเวลา
 (1) ระบบเวลาแบบ 12 ชั่วโมง (12-hour clock) เป็นวิธีการบอกเวลาที่นิยมใช้ใน
ภาษาอังกฤษทั่วไป โดยใช้เลข 1 ถึง 12 ตามด้วย a.m. (ante meridiem) หรือ
p.m. (post meridiem) ต่อท้าย โดยมีหลักการอ่านดังนี้

 หากเป็นเวลาเต็มชั่วโมง ให้เติมคาว่า “O’clock” ตามหลังเลขชั่วโมงนั้นๆได้ และ หาก
เราต้องการย้าถึงเวลา ก็อาจจะเติมคาว่า “sharp” ลงไปด้วย เช่น

 It’s six O’clock now. = ขณะนี้เป็นเวลาหกนาฬิกา
See you tomorrow at six o’clock sharp = แล้วเจอกันพรุ่งนี้
ตอนหกโมงตรง

5.  หากเป็นเวลาที่ผ่านชั่วโมงมาแล้ว แต่ไม่เกินสามสิบนาที ให้ใช้คาว่า “past” เข้ามาช่วยในการบอก
เวลา เช่น

 6.10 = Ten (minutes) past six / Six ten
6.15 = A quarter past six / Six fifteen
6.30 = Half past six / Six thirty

 หากเป็นเวลาที่ผ่านชั่วโมง และเกินสามสิบนาทีมาแล้ว ให้ใช้คาว่า “to” เข้ามาช่วยในการบอกเวลา
เช่น

 6.45 = A quarter to seven / Six forty-five
6.50 = Ten (minutes) to seven / Six fifty
6.35 = Twenty-five (minutes) to seven / Six thirty-five

6.  การอ่านเวลาแบบระบุเวลาเช้า เย็น เป็นวิธีที่ง่าย และมีความชัดเจนในการสื่อสาร ซึ่งเป็นที่
นิยมเช่นกัน เช่น
 4.45 p.m. = four forty-five in the evening
4.00 a.m. = four o’clock in the morning

* หากเป็นเวลาเที่ยงตรงพอดีจะใช้คาว่า “at noon หรือ midday” และหาก
เป็นเวลาเที่ยงคืนตรง ก็จะใช้คาว่า “at midnight”

7.  (2) ระบบเวลาแบบ 24 ชั่วโมง (24-hour clock) เป็นวิธีการบอกเวลาที่ใช้ในหมู่
ทหาร หรือ ในการประชุมทางการต่างๆ เพื่อป้ องกันการสับสนในการบอกเวลา โดยใช้เลข 1
ถึง 23 และ เลข 00 ในเวลาเที่ยงคืน และไม่มี a.m. / p.m. ตามหลัง โดยมีวิธีการ
อ่านเวลาที่ต่างไปจากการอ่านเวลาทั่วไป เช่น

 20.00 = twenty hundred
03.05 = oh three oh five / zero three zero five
00.35 = midnight thirty-five

8. A.M. คือ
a.m. ย่อมาจาก ante meridian เป็นภาษาละติน
หมายถึง ช่วงเวลาระหว่างเที่ยงคืนถึงเที่ยงวัน (before
midday) ซึ่งเป็นการบอกเวลาในช่วงเช้า ‘in the
morning’

9. P.M.คือ
ส่วน p.m. ย่อมาจาก post meridian เป็นภาษาละติน
หมายถึงช่วงเวลาระหว่างเที่ยงวันถึงเที่ยงคืน (after
midday) ซึ่งเป็นการบอกเวลาในช่วงบ่ายหรือเย็น ‘in the
afternoon or evening’ ต่อไปนี้เป็นตัวอย่างประโยคที่
ใช้ระบบการบอกเวลาแบบ a.m. และ p.m.
