Human behavior is the leading cause of security incidents despite increased spending on security awareness training and products according to reports. This is due to employee apathy which is widespread according to studies showing some employees would sell passwords for small amounts. Apathy occurs when knowledge does not translate to action and is difficult for IT to address alone. Organizations need to engage employees by improving meaning in work, leadership, flexibility and growth opportunities to increase engagement which can reduce security risks when behaviors are suffering. Quickly identifying and removing access for disgruntled employees is also important alongside technology that supports secure behaviors through access management, email filtering and file monitoring. Achieving cultural change requires collaboration between functions and may be a long process.
