The thoracic outlet is the space between the collarbone and first rib where blood vessels and nerves pass from the neck into the arm. Compression or irritation in this space can cause thoracic outlet syndrome, which results in pain, numbness, or weakness in the shoulders, neck, arms, and hands. Symptoms are often worsened with certain arm positions or activities that put pressure on the thoracic outlet.
