Thomas Moran was a 19th century American landscape painter known for his romantic and dramatic depictions of the American West in the style of the Hudson River School. He would travel out west to make on-site sketches which he would later use to create large-scale landscape paintings back East. His sketches helped inspire the creation of national parks like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon by showing their natural beauty.
