Educator Matthew Corallo trained as a teacher as well as an administrator and has significant experience in both roles. He taught high school history, government, and geography in New York City from 1999 until 2006, when he joined the administrative ranks as a principal intern. Matthew Corallo subsequently became principal of the High School of Hospitality Management in 2008 and established the school’s partnership with the American Place Theater.

Matthew Corallo subsequently became principal of the
High School of Hospitality Management in 2008 and
established the school’s partnership with the American
Place Theater.
Established as a not-for-profit operation in 1963, the
American Place Theater staged its first full production in
late 1964, a trilogy of three one-act pieces by poet Robert
Lowell called The Old Glory, which went on to win five
Obie Awards, including Best American Play.

3.  Since that auspicious beginning, the theater
has consistently produced high-quality new
work, written primarily by living Americans,
which often emphasizes minority and
immigrant experiences.
In addition to American Place Theater’s main
theatrical productions, the program offers a
performance-based literacy program called
Literature to Life, which stages verbatim
adaptations of significant works of American
literature. This is a robust effort to ensure that
reading continues as a core aspect of
American education.

4.  The program has featured adaptations of
such books as The Things They Carried,
Teacher Man, Black Boy, The Brief Wondrous
Life of Oscar Wao, and The Secret Life of
Bees.
In the fall of 2012, the American Place
Theater merged with Young Audiences
New York in a strategic alliance designed to
maximize the impact both organizations
have on encouraging and inspiring young
audiences.
