Dr. Thomas Stegmann is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Professor of
Surgery and – from December 01, 1984, until March 31, 2006 - Director
of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Fulda
Medical Center in Fulda, Germany. Dr. Stegmann received his medical
degree (summa cum laude) from Heidelberg University, Heidelberg,
Germany and completed a doctoral thesis as part of that degree. The
thesis, entitled “Content of Catecholamines and Change in Enzyme-
Activities of the Cardiac Muscle in experimentally hypertrophied Hearts”
was awarded the prize for “Best Dissertation” by the Medical Faculty of
the University of Heidelberg.
Dr. Stegmann continued his medical training in General and
Cardiovascular Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the Hannover
Medical School, Hannover, Germany, where he was awarded the
“Rudolf-Nissen-Memorial-Prize” by the German Society for Thoracic and

Cardiovascular Surgery. Following his residency training in the Division
of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Hannover Medical School,
Germany, he was appointed Professor of Surgery at Hannover Medical
School.
From 1985 until March 2006, he has held the position of Director of the
Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Fulda Medical
Center, Germany, and has also been a Member of the Faculty of
Hannover Medical School. His main areas of research interests include
coronary surgery, surgery for aortic diseases (especially aortic dissection),
heart valve surgery, heart and lung transplantation, vascular surgery,
pacemaker- and AICD-surgery, surgery of the esophagus, neo-
angiogenesis in the heart and the role of human growth factors.
Dr. Stegmann has been a Faculty Member of the Transcatheter
Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) annual conference, a worldwide
physicians meeting held in Washington, D.C., each fall. Dr. Stegmann is
known internationally for his pioneer work in inducing angiogenesis (the
growth of new vessels) in the heart. Dr. Stegmann has published and
lectured widely in this area. His landmark clinical trials with FGF in
inducing angiogenesis in the heart have been published in prestigious
medical journals including “Circulation” and “Journal of Cardiac and
Vascular Regeneration” and have been reported on in the “New York
Times” and the “Wall Street Journal”.
In 2004, he published the book: “New Vessels for the Heart”, in 2007 he
published the book: “Holding a Woman’s Heart in My Hands”. Dr.
Stegmann is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and a
member of the Ukrainian Academy of Medical Sciences.
From 1998 until January 2009, Dr. Stegmann served as Co-Founder,
Director and Chief Medical Officer for CardioVascular BioTherapeutics,
Inc. (CVBT), a Las Vegas based Biotech Company; later on he served as
CEO, President and Chairman of the Board of Phage Biotechnology
Corporation (until February 2010). Since August 2011, Dr. Stegmann
serves as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Phage Pharmaceuticals, Inc.,
San Diego, USA.
