TheBot is an open hardware platform introduced by ThoughtWorks as an experiment aimed at research, learning, and kickstarting a hardware engineering culture. The presentation covered what TheBot has been built to do so far, potential next applications like home automation and security, and future improvements to abilities such as ruggedness, mapping, human-computer interaction, robotics, efficiency, sensing, and communications. A demo was then provided, followed by thanks from the presenters.

Designing for connected products is different. To create a great connected product, industrial design, software UX and system design need to be considered in collaboration. Teams must think creatively to design elegant solutions around the limited capabilities of embedded devices.
Effective prototyping is key, but there are lots of possible methods. Choosing the right ones is a question of purpose – what you need to learn – and the effort required to develop it. Techniques like video sketching or enactment, not commonly used in software UX design, can be especially well suited to developing IoT user experiences.
In this talk, Martin will draw on his experience in both product and digital design to present ways in which teams can work together effectively and choose the right design methods to prototype the product experience.

IndianaJS - Building spatially aware web sites for the Web of Things
While almost any device today may have a virtual representation, the web itself is not yet a very physical experience. Bringing proven spatial interaction and ubiquitous computing paradigms to life using current web technology, we designed IndianaJS, a JavaScript framework to add a physical browsing experience to any Web of Things content. The evaluation of the IoT-Radar, built on top of our library, shows that web-based hyper-reality can still achieve a unique user experience 15 years after the first implementations.
This presentation introduces the library, showcases our physical browser - the IoT Compass, and presents the results of our usability study. It was presented the Web of Things Workshop within the International Conference on the Internet of Things 2015 in Seoul, South Korea.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
