Pelmo was born in 1939 in Charbang, Bhutan. As a child, he helped his parents with farming and caring for cattle. He had two brothers and two sisters. Pelmo attended a religious school as a boy but did not complete his studies. He married Kuenzang in an arranged marriage according to local customs. Unfortunately, Kuenzang and their daughter passed away at a young age. Though he never remarried, Pelmo had a close relationship with his brother. As an elder in his community, Pelmo participated in cultural and religious traditions over the years and visited many sacred sites. He also provided fortune telling services to others until later deciding to stop the practice.

The project of gathering family research through primary sources like interviews proved to be an interesting and insightful experience that taught the author more than expected about their family's history.
Orphanages, Good or Bad - Essay 2016
1) The author recounts being sent to an orphanage at age 5 after enduring physical and emotional abuse at home. In contrast to the abuse at home, the orphanage provided food, clothing, and a caring director, and the author thrived with activities, education, and feeling loved.
2) Statistics show high rates of abuse, neglect, and adverse outcomes for orphans, but the author was an exception, experiencing none of the predicted negative effects.
3) While visitations with their mother led to resumed abuse, the author was resilient, choosing to remember the positive impact of their time in the orphanage rather than becoming a negative statistic.

Nicole Pangilinan was born in 1998 in the Philippines and lived there until she was 6 years old. In 2004, she and her family moved to Canada. Some notable events from her past include the death of her grandfather in 2004, which greatly impacted her. She also found moving to a new country both happy and sad, as she left family behind but started a new life. Now living in Canada for over 10 years, Nicole hopes to attend university and become both a doctor and a vet. She plans to achieve these goals by maintaining good grades to get accepted into college programs related to these careers.

- 2. Happy Days-1979: Mom & Dad’s Wedding Day (Dad had not yet been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.)
- 3. 1985: My sister and I Dad was living with Cancer at this time.
- 4. 4 months before Dad passed He knew that he was about to die, so he took us to Disney World, where we met my Aunt Karon (right).
- 5. October 2, 1999: The day our lives changed forever • At 15, I was the passenger on a 4 wheeler, and I was not wearing a helmet. The ATV collided with a passing truck, and I was instantly knocked into a deep coma. 2 E.M.T.s, who happened to be at a cook-out next door, saw the accident, called the Life Flight, and ran over to me. I was then airlifted to OSF Saint Francis, in Peoria, IL. No one knew whether or not I would live. As you can imagine, my family members were beside themselves; especially my poor mother.
- 6. Me while in my coma The nurses would attempt to get me up and moving around each day, once I was ‘out of the woods’. My mom was so happy that I was making any progress at all, even though (at that point) she had no idea how well I would be able to function for the rest of my life.
- 7. At hospital with my mom and step-dad, Eric. They slept on the hard floor of my room for 24 nights.
- 8. At the hospital Miraculously, I only had to spend 30 days in the hospital. My mom and step-dad stayed with me during that time. The pink belt around my waste was so that I could be held up by whoever was taking me for walks.
- 9. Another day at the hospital. Since my bangs were shaved, Mom used to comb over my hair and pin it with a barrette.
- 10. 2009 Bradley Graduation (10 years after my accident, I graduated from Bradley University, with a Bachelor’s of Science, through an individualized major program.)
- 11. • Today, I still live with several physical and cognitive challenges & limitations that stem from my brain injury, but I try to live life to its fullest each day. I am currently working on 3 books and an invention, and I frequently volunteer for the Fulton County Humane Society. My mother taught me to be strong, determined, and to persevere; just by being a wonderful role model. Although I have an extraordinarily amazing family overall, I know that I could not be where I am at today, without the unfailing love and support of my mother.
