The Water of Zamzam (Serves the Purpose) it has been Drunk for

Hajjes and visitors of Mecca aspire to drink from the water of Zamzam; this blessed
water, which had gushed out under the feet of Ishmael -peace be upon him- in an
apparent miracle. It has also remained the water, which stops the thirst of millions of
people in spit of the smallness of the well and the place where it exists.

Allah -all mighty be he- has made the well of Zamzam a blessed one since it has long
been acting the role of rivers, and that proves that it is from the rivers of his mercy which
overwhelms everything.

Allah has blessed it in the sense that it produces the sufficient water for all Hajjes even if
they are millions. It also provides them with water, drink, and recovery as well.

Concerning the properties of the water of Zamzam, there are many things that show that
it is not like any kind of water, for Allah puts a secret within this water; this secret
correlates with that mosque, which had been the first on earth to be built for people to
pray in, and it has been a secure sanctuary for mankind.

Moreover, people have been ordered to go and pray there; furthermore, Hajj and Omra in
it have been imposed on people; besides, the visitors of this Mosque have been called
"the guests of Allah". In addition, the place where it exists has been a sanctuary where all
kinds of fruit are brought as a provision from Allah. Therefore, it is no wander that the
water, which had gushed out under the feet of Ishmael -peace be upon him- contains the
blessing of the whole place, the glory of Mecca, and the spirit of the sights and sacred
feelings.

In his Al-Mostadrak, Al-Hakim stated that Abu Thar said: "I arrived at the prophet
(P.B.U.H); He then said "who are you? Where do you come from? Why have you come?"
I answered him; he afterwards asked me where was I eating and drinking from, and when
I said to him "from the water of Zamazm", he said: "it is a delicious food indeed"."

This hadith was also mentioned by Al-Tabarani in As-Saghir, and by As-Syouti in
Gam" Al-Gwame".

Abu Thar stayed in Mecca for thirty days without food or drink but the water of
Zamzam until he became fat.

Az-Zorkoshi in his book Eelam As-Saged Beahkam Al-Masaged (page 205),
stated a hadith, mentioned also by Al-Tabarani. Ibn Abbas -May Allah be pleased with
him and his father- said that the prophet (P.B.U.H) said: "The water of Zamzam is the
best on earth; it provides people with provisions and recovery."

The Honor of Zamzam

Concerning the honor of Zamzam, a lot of hadiths were said, one of which was on
the authority of Al-Bukhari Muslim and Al-Bayhaki: Shareek Bin AbduAllah Bin Abu
Nemr said that he heard Anas Bin Malek -May Allah be Pleased with him-talking about
the night when Allah took his devotee (Muhammad) from the Inviolable House of
Warship to Masjid Al-Aqsa. He said: "Three persons came to the prophet (P.B.U.H),
carried him and put him beside the well of Zamzam. One of them, Gabriel -Peace be
upon him- dealed with him, he split his chest and, by his hands, washed his coelom with
the water of Zamzam until he purified his coelom. Afterwards, he brought a basin - a
container made of stone or copper - full of faith and wisdom, with which Gabriel stuffed
his chest and gills then closed it again.

In his Mosnad, Emam Ahmad recorded that Abu Gamrah said: "I was decreasing
the crowd around Bin Abbas -May Allah be pleased with them both- in Mecca, then he
missed me for some days. He asked me about the reason for my absence; I answered
"fever". He said: "break it down with the water of Zamzam, for the prophet said: "Fever
is part of the vastness of Hell-fire, so calm it with the water of Zamzam"."

The Names of Zamzam

Zamzam has a lot of names like the kick of Gabriel and the spur of Gabriel, for
when Ishmael-peace be upon him- was thirsty, and when his mother did not find water
for him, and ran between As-Safa and Al-Marwa, Gabriel-peace be upon him- came to
her, and with his wings, he spurred the ground under the feet of Ishmael while he was
asleep, so water gushed out under his feet. During that time, his mother came running and
kept on surrounding the water saying " Zem, Zem ", meaning: gather.

Concerning that incident, the prophet (P.B.U.H) said: "May Allah have mercy
upon Ishmael"s mother; hadn"t she said for the water " Zem Zem oh, blessed well," it
would have been a flooding well." Mentioned in Sahih Al-Bukhari, in the Chapters of
selling"s and the beginning of creation.

Afterwards, there was a conversation between Hagar and Ishmael; this
conversation shows how profound the faith of this great lady is. This lady was chosen by
Allah to be the mother of Ishmael Bin Ibrahim, who will be the grandfather of the lord of
mankind (The prophet -P.B.U.H).

In Ath-Tha"laby, The Biography of the Prophets, Gabriel came to Hagar while
she was running between As-Safa and Al-Marwa looking for water. He said to her: "Who
are you?" She replied: "I am Hagar, the wife of Ibrahim, the intimate friend of Allah, and
he left me here." Gabriel then said: "In charge of whom did he leave you? " She replied: "
In charge of Allah." He then said: "He left you in charge of a sufficient."

Afterwards, he came to the place of the well and kicked it with his foot, so water
gushed out; therefore, it is called (the Kick of Gabriel).

When Hagar saw the water, she was afraid it might have vanished or come to an
end, so she hurried up filling her skin. Gabriel then said: "Do not apprehend the depletion
of water, and do not be afraid of thirst, for this well is a one from which drinks the guests
of Allah. The father of this kid will one day come and build -together with the kid- the
House of Allah, here in this place."

It is also called The Satisfier, for it satisfies the thirst of whoever drinks this water.
Another name for the well is The Quencher, for it quenches one"s thirst. The Useful is
also one of its names, for it is useful for many things. It is called The Curer, for it cures a
lot of diseases. It is also The Blessed, for the felicities and good fortune it contains. It also
has many other names.

Although the water of Zamzam satisfies one"s thirst, it has a salty taste followed by
a sweet one. Az-Zorkoshi justified this salty taste logically; he said: "Allah made it so to
make the drinker of it overwhelmed by the salt of faith. If it were a sweet one, however, it
would have been mostly overwhelmed by the humanitarian nature.

Of the wonders of Zamzam:

One of the wonders of Zamzam is that her water increases and sweetens every
season. Although millions of people drink from Zamzam, its water does not does not
decrease. Moreover, its water is transferred to the sanctuary of Madina to quench the
thirst of all who are there with out affecting its gift.

All Muslims appreciate this water; they aspire to drink from it and carry it home.
Moreover, the Prophet (P.B.U.H) was carrying and demanding it.

In his, Akhbar Mecca, Al-Fakehi narrated that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) wrote in a
message to Sohayl Bin Amr: At the moment you receive this message, immediately send
me some of the water of Zamzam. Of course Sohayl and his wife did that immediately.

The water of Zamzam is a curer; it is narrated that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said,
"The water of Zamzam cures any disease." This hadith is also mentioned in As-Sayouti"s
Al-Game" As-Saghir and Gam" Al-Gwame".

The Prophet (P.B.U.H) was also urging people to drink from the water of
Zamzam as much as they can. He was also saying" There is a difference between us(the
believers) and the hypocrites; they can never be satisfied( totally quenched) by the water
of Zamzam."

Hydrolysises proves the purity of the water of Zamzam:

Researchers have always been caring about the water of Zamzam. After many
researches they proved that the water of Zamzam is the purest among any other kind of
waters and the best as a drink.

What proves that it is a real miracle is that it had gushed out in that barren place
which had never been inhabited before Ishmael and his mother. This place about which
Abraham said, "O our Lord! Behold; I have spent some of my offspring in a barren valley
near your Inviolable House. Our Rabb! I have done this hoping that people may establish
proper prayers, so turn the hearts of people towards them and provide them with fruits so
that they may be thankful." (Ibrahim. 37). Therefore, the quality of this water surpasses
any other kind of waters.

In addition, in spite of its permanent production of water for more than forty
centuries and up till now, it satisfies whoever comes for her. It is another miracle indeed.

Researchers state that the water of Zamzam origins from the underneath of the
holy ka"ba and from the direction of As-Safa and Al-Marwah, which are among the
symbols set up by Allah. It is also strange that its height does never surpass the well"s
level though the well and the whole sanctuary are higher than the other parts of Mecca.

Specialists say: If the well had been in the middle of the valley, the water would
have flooded on the surface of the earth; but it had been kept in that place as a gift from
Allah to keep the water inside the sanctuary and not surpassing it.

Once it rained heavily in the year 1338 A.H, and water flooded and broke into the
sanctuary, but the water of Zamzam gushed out inside the well so that it did not receive a
single drop of water from the flood. People then said," The well purifies itself by itself."

The water of Zamzam serves the purpose for which it has been drunk:

In his Msannaf, Bin Abu Shaybah, in his Mosnad, Ahmed; in his Sonan, Bin
Magah- all of them mentioned that Gaber Bin Abdullah- may Allah be pleased with him
and his father- said that the Prophet(P.B.U.H) said "The water of Zamzam serves the
purpose for which it has been drunk."

That means that when the drinker implies a certain good thing while drinking from
the water of Zamzam, what he implies will undoubtedly take place. Therefore, scholars
said it is advised, while drinking from Zamzam, that the drinker should pray; the prayer
should face Al-Kiblah (the destination of the Ka"ba). Moreover, the companions of the
Prophet (P.B.U.H) were praying while drinking from Zamzam. Bin Abbas- may Allah be
pleased with him and his father- was saying while drinking from Zamzam, "O Allah, I
ask you to grant me useful knowledge, large provisions, and a recovery from any disease-
by your mercy, o" most merciful."

This is proved in imam Galal Ad-Din As-Sayouti"s Hosn Al-Mohadarah as he
says, " When I performed hajj I drank from the water of Zamzam implying many hopes;
for example, I hoped to reach the rank of Ash-Sheikh Serag Ad-Din Al-Balkini
concerning the the study of doctrine. In another narration it is said "to the rank of Al
Hafez Bin Hagar." As-Sayouti mentioned " I afterwards had a deep knowledge of seven
different departments: explanation, hadith, doctrine, grammar, ma"ni, rhetoric, and the art
of figures of speech.
The carefulness of those who are in charge of Zamzam in Saudi Arabia:

The officials in Saudi Arabia give due care to the well of Zamzam. They also
established an independent administration in order to supervise the refinement,
production, and distribution of the water and to keep it in a high level. In fact, the water
flows through pure pipes; it is also digged out by modern machines. Furthermore, it is
easily distributed in the sense that every one drinks in his place without exerting any
effort.

The Water of Zamzam (Serves the Purpose) it has been Drunk for

  • 1. The Water of Zamzam (Serves the Purpose) it has been Drunk for Hajjes and visitors of Mecca aspire to drink from the water of Zamzam; this blessed water, which had gushed out under the feet of Ishmael -peace be upon him- in an apparent miracle. It has also remained the water, which stops the thirst of millions of people in spit of the smallness of the well and the place where it exists. Allah -all mighty be he- has made the well of Zamzam a blessed one since it has long been acting the role of rivers, and that proves that it is from the rivers of his mercy which overwhelms everything. Allah has blessed it in the sense that it produces the sufficient water for all Hajjes even if they are millions. It also provides them with water, drink, and recovery as well. Concerning the properties of the water of Zamzam, there are many things that show that it is not like any kind of water, for Allah puts a secret within this water; this secret correlates with that mosque, which had been the first on earth to be built for people to pray in, and it has been a secure sanctuary for mankind. Moreover, people have been ordered to go and pray there; furthermore, Hajj and Omra in it have been imposed on people; besides, the visitors of this Mosque have been called "the guests of Allah". In addition, the place where it exists has been a sanctuary where all kinds of fruit are brought as a provision from Allah. Therefore, it is no wander that the water, which had gushed out under the feet of Ishmael -peace be upon him- contains the blessing of the whole place, the glory of Mecca, and the spirit of the sights and sacred feelings. In his Al-Mostadrak, Al-Hakim stated that Abu Thar said: "I arrived at the prophet (P.B.U.H); He then said "who are you? Where do you come from? Why have you come?" I answered him; he afterwards asked me where was I eating and drinking from, and when I said to him "from the water of Zamazm", he said: "it is a delicious food indeed"." This hadith was also mentioned by Al-Tabarani in As-Saghir, and by As-Syouti in Gam" Al-Gwame". Abu Thar stayed in Mecca for thirty days without food or drink but the water of Zamzam until he became fat. Az-Zorkoshi in his book Eelam As-Saged Beahkam Al-Masaged (page 205), stated a hadith, mentioned also by Al-Tabarani. Ibn Abbas -May Allah be pleased with him and his father- said that the prophet (P.B.U.H) said: "The water of Zamzam is the best on earth; it provides people with provisions and recovery." The Honor of Zamzam Concerning the honor of Zamzam, a lot of hadiths were said, one of which was on
  • 2. the authority of Al-Bukhari Muslim and Al-Bayhaki: Shareek Bin AbduAllah Bin Abu Nemr said that he heard Anas Bin Malek -May Allah be Pleased with him-talking about the night when Allah took his devotee (Muhammad) from the Inviolable House of Warship to Masjid Al-Aqsa. He said: "Three persons came to the prophet (P.B.U.H), carried him and put him beside the well of Zamzam. One of them, Gabriel -Peace be upon him- dealed with him, he split his chest and, by his hands, washed his coelom with the water of Zamzam until he purified his coelom. Afterwards, he brought a basin - a container made of stone or copper - full of faith and wisdom, with which Gabriel stuffed his chest and gills then closed it again. In his Mosnad, Emam Ahmad recorded that Abu Gamrah said: "I was decreasing the crowd around Bin Abbas -May Allah be pleased with them both- in Mecca, then he missed me for some days. He asked me about the reason for my absence; I answered "fever". He said: "break it down with the water of Zamzam, for the prophet said: "Fever is part of the vastness of Hell-fire, so calm it with the water of Zamzam"." The Names of Zamzam Zamzam has a lot of names like the kick of Gabriel and the spur of Gabriel, for when Ishmael-peace be upon him- was thirsty, and when his mother did not find water for him, and ran between As-Safa and Al-Marwa, Gabriel-peace be upon him- came to her, and with his wings, he spurred the ground under the feet of Ishmael while he was asleep, so water gushed out under his feet. During that time, his mother came running and kept on surrounding the water saying " Zem, Zem ", meaning: gather. Concerning that incident, the prophet (P.B.U.H) said: "May Allah have mercy upon Ishmael"s mother; hadn"t she said for the water " Zem Zem oh, blessed well," it would have been a flooding well." Mentioned in Sahih Al-Bukhari, in the Chapters of selling"s and the beginning of creation. Afterwards, there was a conversation between Hagar and Ishmael; this conversation shows how profound the faith of this great lady is. This lady was chosen by Allah to be the mother of Ishmael Bin Ibrahim, who will be the grandfather of the lord of mankind (The prophet -P.B.U.H). In Ath-Tha"laby, The Biography of the Prophets, Gabriel came to Hagar while she was running between As-Safa and Al-Marwa looking for water. He said to her: "Who are you?" She replied: "I am Hagar, the wife of Ibrahim, the intimate friend of Allah, and he left me here." Gabriel then said: "In charge of whom did he leave you? " She replied: " In charge of Allah." He then said: "He left you in charge of a sufficient." Afterwards, he came to the place of the well and kicked it with his foot, so water gushed out; therefore, it is called (the Kick of Gabriel). When Hagar saw the water, she was afraid it might have vanished or come to an end, so she hurried up filling her skin. Gabriel then said: "Do not apprehend the depletion
  • 3. of water, and do not be afraid of thirst, for this well is a one from which drinks the guests of Allah. The father of this kid will one day come and build -together with the kid- the House of Allah, here in this place." It is also called The Satisfier, for it satisfies the thirst of whoever drinks this water. Another name for the well is The Quencher, for it quenches one"s thirst. The Useful is also one of its names, for it is useful for many things. It is called The Curer, for it cures a lot of diseases. It is also The Blessed, for the felicities and good fortune it contains. It also has many other names. Although the water of Zamzam satisfies one"s thirst, it has a salty taste followed by a sweet one. Az-Zorkoshi justified this salty taste logically; he said: "Allah made it so to make the drinker of it overwhelmed by the salt of faith. If it were a sweet one, however, it would have been mostly overwhelmed by the humanitarian nature. Of the wonders of Zamzam: One of the wonders of Zamzam is that her water increases and sweetens every season. Although millions of people drink from Zamzam, its water does not does not decrease. Moreover, its water is transferred to the sanctuary of Madina to quench the thirst of all who are there with out affecting its gift. All Muslims appreciate this water; they aspire to drink from it and carry it home. Moreover, the Prophet (P.B.U.H) was carrying and demanding it. In his, Akhbar Mecca, Al-Fakehi narrated that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) wrote in a message to Sohayl Bin Amr: At the moment you receive this message, immediately send me some of the water of Zamzam. Of course Sohayl and his wife did that immediately. The water of Zamzam is a curer; it is narrated that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said, "The water of Zamzam cures any disease." This hadith is also mentioned in As-Sayouti"s Al-Game" As-Saghir and Gam" Al-Gwame". The Prophet (P.B.U.H) was also urging people to drink from the water of Zamzam as much as they can. He was also saying" There is a difference between us(the believers) and the hypocrites; they can never be satisfied( totally quenched) by the water of Zamzam." Hydrolysises proves the purity of the water of Zamzam: Researchers have always been caring about the water of Zamzam. After many researches they proved that the water of Zamzam is the purest among any other kind of waters and the best as a drink. What proves that it is a real miracle is that it had gushed out in that barren place which had never been inhabited before Ishmael and his mother. This place about which
  • 4. Abraham said, "O our Lord! Behold; I have spent some of my offspring in a barren valley near your Inviolable House. Our Rabb! I have done this hoping that people may establish proper prayers, so turn the hearts of people towards them and provide them with fruits so that they may be thankful." (Ibrahim. 37). Therefore, the quality of this water surpasses any other kind of waters. In addition, in spite of its permanent production of water for more than forty centuries and up till now, it satisfies whoever comes for her. It is another miracle indeed. Researchers state that the water of Zamzam origins from the underneath of the holy ka"ba and from the direction of As-Safa and Al-Marwah, which are among the symbols set up by Allah. It is also strange that its height does never surpass the well"s level though the well and the whole sanctuary are higher than the other parts of Mecca. Specialists say: If the well had been in the middle of the valley, the water would have flooded on the surface of the earth; but it had been kept in that place as a gift from Allah to keep the water inside the sanctuary and not surpassing it. Once it rained heavily in the year 1338 A.H, and water flooded and broke into the sanctuary, but the water of Zamzam gushed out inside the well so that it did not receive a single drop of water from the flood. People then said," The well purifies itself by itself." The water of Zamzam serves the purpose for which it has been drunk: In his Msannaf, Bin Abu Shaybah, in his Mosnad, Ahmed; in his Sonan, Bin Magah- all of them mentioned that Gaber Bin Abdullah- may Allah be pleased with him and his father- said that the Prophet(P.B.U.H) said "The water of Zamzam serves the purpose for which it has been drunk." That means that when the drinker implies a certain good thing while drinking from the water of Zamzam, what he implies will undoubtedly take place. Therefore, scholars said it is advised, while drinking from Zamzam, that the drinker should pray; the prayer should face Al-Kiblah (the destination of the Ka"ba). Moreover, the companions of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) were praying while drinking from Zamzam. Bin Abbas- may Allah be pleased with him and his father- was saying while drinking from Zamzam, "O Allah, I ask you to grant me useful knowledge, large provisions, and a recovery from any disease- by your mercy, o" most merciful." This is proved in imam Galal Ad-Din As-Sayouti"s Hosn Al-Mohadarah as he says, " When I performed hajj I drank from the water of Zamzam implying many hopes; for example, I hoped to reach the rank of Ash-Sheikh Serag Ad-Din Al-Balkini concerning the the study of doctrine. In another narration it is said "to the rank of Al Hafez Bin Hagar." As-Sayouti mentioned " I afterwards had a deep knowledge of seven different departments: explanation, hadith, doctrine, grammar, ma"ni, rhetoric, and the art of figures of speech.
  • 5. The carefulness of those who are in charge of Zamzam in Saudi Arabia: The officials in Saudi Arabia give due care to the well of Zamzam. They also established an independent administration in order to supervise the refinement, production, and distribution of the water and to keep it in a high level. In fact, the water flows through pure pipes; it is also digged out by modern machines. Furthermore, it is easily distributed in the sense that every one drinks in his place without exerting any effort.
