The village of Viscri is one of the oldest in Transylvania, with its origins lost in time. It has a population of Roma, Romanians, and about 20 Germans. While people traditionally lived from farming and animal husbandry, tourism has recently become a new industry as many have transformed traditional Saxon houses into guesthouses. The fortified church of Viscri is part of UNESCO's World Heritage sites and is the main landmark of the village, rising above the gentle hills representing an unchanged traditional atmosphere. A visit to Viscri provides an authentic experience of traveling back in time to a purer way of life far from modern civilization.
