2. There once was a baker in a poor
country who descended from a long line of
royalty.
3. He chose to be a baker even though he had
royal roots because…
he loved baking bread more than almost
anything.
4. But there was one
thing he loved more than
baking.
A rare blue diamond
that had been passed
down through many
generations of his family.
5. Because of its history,
clarity, and size, the
diamond was worth
more than $5 billion in
today’s dollars.
But to the baker, it was
invaluable because it
was a prized family
keepsake.
6. One day, while the baker was on vacation,
a freak earthquake shook his kitchen
violently.
The shaking shattered the diamond’s
protective glass case, and the diamond fell
into a batch of the baker’s dough.
7. When the earthquake was over, one of
the baker’s assistants cleaned up the mess
made in the kitchen, not realizing that the
diamond was missing.
8. He then resumed his baking duties, which
included baking the day’s loaves of bread,
packaging them, and distributing them to
local bakeries across the country.
9. When the baker returned home, he
immediately realized the diamond was
missing and determined that it must have
been baked into a loaf of bread.
His beloved diamond was now sitting on a
store shelf, encased in a loaf of bread.
10. The baker immediately issued a $5,000
reward in today’s dollars for anyone who
found and returned the diamond to him.
He also decreed that whoever found the
diamond would get to pick 13 people who
would get a loaf of bread everyday for a
whole year.
11. The baker’s misfortune was one of the
most exciting things to happen to the
country’s citizens in years, as the thought of
finding a hidden diamond and receiving a
$5,000 reward was exciting and beyond
belief for most local citizens.
13. The citizen that claimed the reward – a kind
young man named Hans – used the $5,000 to
open a soup kitchen for the country’s hungry
population. The soup kitchen would go on to
feed thousands of hungry families for many
years to come.
Hans also chose 13 of the poorest people in his
village to receive a loaf of bread every day for a
year.
14. In the baker’s story, the loaf of bread containing
the baker’s diamond has so much more value than
a typical loaf of bread.
15. To the baker,
• The loaf containing the
diamond has a monetary
value of $5 billion dollars –
the value of the diamond.
• The bread also has an
emotional value that is
nearly infinite, as the
diamond contained in the loaf
is the baker’s prized
possession and an
irreplaceable family
heirloom.

• The bread is worth $5,000, the amount
offered as a reward by the baker.
• And the joy of picking 13 villagers who will
receive bread everyday for a year.
17. To the townspeople,
• The loaf of bread provided
value in the sense that it
introduced an excitement that
had been lost for years.
• And thanks to Hans’ generosity,
the loaf of bread also became a
soup kitchen that fed
thousands of hungry
townspeople for years to
come.
• And 13 people ate free bread
for a year.
