2. 2. Conflict / Resolution

Conflict – a struggle between two opposing forces or the “main problem.”

Resolution – the way the story turns out, or “how the problem is resolved.”

 4. 4. Check Your Comprehension

Explain how the fisherman and his wife come to have a son.

The fisherman finds a small grey seal stranded on a sandbar. Later, the seal (or selchie) turns into a boy.

Why is the son called Greyling?

Because his eyes and hair were “the color of a storm-coming sky,” or the color gray.

 5. 5.

Summarize what happens when Greyling saves his father.

Against his mother’s will, Greyling dives into the vigorous sea. The rough surf tore away his clothing and shoes, which enables him to swim easily. Greyling successfully rescues his father, and gives a “final salute” while joyfully returning to sea.

 6. 6.

What does Greyling do when he returns home?

He returns to tell his parents “tales of the lands that lie far beyond the waters, and to sing them songs of the wonders that lie far beneath the sea.”

 7. 7. Critical Thinking

Why does the fisherman feel it is wrong to keep Greyling from the sea?

He knows that Greyling is a selchie (part seal) and the sea is his real home.

As Greyling grows up, his heart longs and grieves for something he cannot name. What is he longing for?

He longs to return to the sea.

 8. 8.

Does Greyling know what will happen when he dives into the sea? Support your answer.

Greyling probably is not sure what is going to happen because he has not been in the sea for a long time.

 9. 9.

What point does this story make about loving and letting go? Do you agree?

Even though the family was upset about losing Greyling, in the end they both realized that Greyling had “gone where his heart calls, gone to the great wide sea.” The fisherman and his wife learned that there was no way of preventing Greyling from returning to his true home.
