Sean Burke-Gaffney on the future of VR and seamless mixed reality
Sean Burke-Gaffney, Director of Technology in Southeast Asia, says that the future of VR and AR will be Mixed Reality - which will work on almost invisible technology.
Cumbersome headsets, heavy gloves and accessories will soon be a thing of the past. The future of VR and AR is being developed now. The likes of Meta 2, Microsoft’s HoloLens and Magic Leap are all pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved.
All of the above focus on enhancing the reality you’re currently in, as opposed to transporting you to a completely different reality through the Oculus, Fove or even Google Cardboard.
Mixed Reality is a combination of AR and VR, it’s the merging of the real world with digital visualizations that add to, or improve, our experience in real time. It will feel far more seamless and integrated with our daily lives than current VR offerings.
As part of the #Whatsticks series hosted by SapientNitro on 28th April 2016, Sean shared a brief history of VR.
He explained that NASA and the military have been using the tech since the 1970s. It’s only becoming more commercial now because advances in technology and processing power which have brought down the cost of entry.

Virtual Reality is the new frontier for technology, but what about the web? It can’t just be about gaming, right?
Browsers aren’t yet a platform for distributing VR content, whether that’s 3D or 360-degree video. But will that change? If so, when? In this session, we’ll look at the current state of producing, developing, and distributing VR content, with examples of who is doing it really well and a variety of existing applications.
More importantly, we’ll cast a look into the future for when to expect things to open up within the browser and what new applications that’ll introduce (think a whole new method of education). Hopefully, you’ll leave inspired with fresh ideas and feel equipped to start pioneering ahead of the next generation of immersive web-based experiences.

2016 is the year that virtual reality hits the consumer market with at least five major VR platforms coming from heavyweights such as Google, Sony, Oculus, Samsung and Valve. These platforms offer different solutions to the problem of input in VR including everything from position tracking controllers to single button input schemes. Learn how to design compelling UX that is intuitive, what concepts translate across each platform, as well as a few things to avoid along the way.
Virtual Reality: Learn to Maximize Present and Future Creative Possibilities!
2014 is the year that virtual reality will go from a bad memory from the 90s to the beginning of a new way to experience content. Already the Oculus Rift has started to transform several industries with its ability to transport you to a completely interactive virtual space. As a designer and/or developer, this transformation will change the way you look at your work.
The first time you build something on the screen and then project yourself into your own creation, you quickly feel a sense of wonder and excitement from experiencing content in a way you never expected. You will also realize that many things that work well with a typical mouse, keyboard and computer screen work considerably different in the virtual world. Sharing these experiences with Stephan will help you to understand how to leverage what works in virtual reality, future possibilities and what to avoid so your virtual experiences will be effective at immersing users in your virtual creations.

Major players from various industries such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Sony, & UNITY all the way down to startups and VCs are revolutionizing the VR industry. Join gumi’s Head of Global BD in a session showcasing their achievements within AR / VR as well as the opportunity to take a peek into the current and future trends of VR in Asia and the world.

These slides use ideas from my class to develop a business model for Oculus Rift’s headset. This headset creates the perception among users that they are in a different reality as they play video games. It has much higher resolution and faster response time than do previous headsets. Although Oculus hopes to develop its own console, these slides recommend that Oculus partner with a console maker such as Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo in order to reduce development cost and gain access to existing users and game software. Hopefully it can receive a portion of hardware and game software revenues as its headset enables console makers to increase their market share and charge more for game software.

Duality: Welcome to The Futures
My FutureFest 2016 keynote, delivering a 20 year overview of VR, AR, AI, Automotive, Digital Tattoos, LEGO and the political landscape (featuring Donald Trump, Biff Tannen and Elon Musk)
By 2036, boundaries have blurred between social, personal, occupational and political channels. Communication occurs on a device and platform-agnostic ecosystem and we are no longer obsessed with the possession of constantly updating hardware – content is more than king, it is everything. Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Realities mean nothing without engaging experiences so ‘Duality’ has become a phenomenon with location and situation-based parallel time-streams available in-eye, on demand.
Always-on AR provides a seamless stream of information, identifying individuals' team affiliation and tribal allegiance. Information has escaped the constraints of the traditional screen and subdermal digital tattoos, shape-shifting clothing and haptic surfaces offer the ultimate in creative personal expression. Gamification is a way of life, not a smokescreen to mask mediocre content. From our daily commute, be that public networks or autonomous personal transport, to our mobile work environments and social activity, each 24 hour timeframe is punctuated by bite-sized digital leisure opportunities. We are all playing the game, the game is life.

Mobile is part of a much bigger picture. The smartphone in your pocket can lead a consumer into a store, a showroom or event. Mobile content can also provide the virtual theatre taken away from a physical space. Real life meets virtual reality in this guide to a seamless narrative.
I chose the enduring physical interactive wonder of Lego as my creative theme and introduced projects for Guinness World Records, Lexus, Rolls Royce, Toyota, Doctor Who, The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, The Doors, Jarle Bernhoft, Disney and Oculus Rift.

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
