The Space Race began in 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, into orbit around Earth. They then launched Sputnik 2 carrying a dog named Laika as the first living passenger in space. This sparked the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States led by President Eisenhower.
