One of my proudest accomplishments as a saddle fitter over the past 15 years
has been achieving status as a Qualified Master Saddle Fitter, which requires
highly specialized coursework on horse anatomy and gait, horse/rider
dynamics, and saddle making and repair. All certified professionals must
receive sponsorship from the British organization Society of Master Saddlers,
Ltd., or from a fully certified Master Saddler.
There currently are 24 Qualified Saddle Fitters in the United States, but only
approximately 15 individuals designated as Master Saddlers and trained to the
Society's exacting standards. Qualified Master Saddle Fitter is a separate
designation that requires a grueling, weeklong accreditation process, including
a sunup-to-sundown educational course and comprehensive examination
process.

The Society of Master Saddlers was formed in 1966 with a vision of providing
craft retail saddlers with a dedicated trade association. In the decades since,
the organization has grown to embrace all aspects of the trade, providing an
invaluable resource for horse owners in finding quality saddle retailers and
securing the services of qualified saddlers. The Society of Master Saddlers'
website at www.mastersaddlers.co.uk is an excellent resource for those
interested in fitting their horses with the safest and most comfortable, custom-
crafted saddles or horse clothing.
