Little Venice
The area around the Regent's Canal is said to have been
christened “Little Venice” by either the poet Robert
Browning or by Lord Byron.
Since the junction where the
Regent's Canal meets the
Paddington arm of the
Grand Union Canal is
named Browning's Pool
after the poet, we'd like to
give the credit to Byron –
fair's fair, after all!

Canal Tunnels
There are three canal tunnels in London – all on the
Regent's Canal.
The Maida Hill tunnel was
the first to be built, with
construction started in
1812 and the tunnel
opened for use in 1816.
The shortest is Eyre's
tunnel – at only 53 yards
(48 metres) it's often
mistaken for a particularly
wide bridge.

The Blow-Up Bridge
The odd name is due to a tragic accident in
1874 – a barge carrying gunpowder
exploded directly beneath the bridge. The
cast iron pillars were retrieved and reinstated
as part of the new bridge.

Wild Life
It's easy to think of the city
as being just for humans –
but a short trip along the
canal will soon show you
that there's plenty of wild
life around too!
Swans, ducks and geese
all thrive on the waters of
the Regent's Canal.

Seeing it all for yourself...
Whilst we can show you the sights and tell you about the
history of the canal, there's really no substitute for seeing
it for yourself.
You can, of course, enjoy all these sights on foot and
enjoy a pleasant stroll along the canal footpath, but there
are some sections where you'll have to leave the canal,
including some of the tunnels and bridges.
A relaxing cruise along the canal in a boat like our
luxurious Prince Regent or the unique, vintage Lapwing
allows you to see it all in comfort and style!
