SC CTSI Goals
 Improve the health of diverse and under-represented
minorities of Los Angeles County
 Train a cadre of young researchers who have
competency in translating research findings to the
community and improve their health.
Background and Problem
 2012 we conducted a multi-university workshop to
develop competencies in conducting research in
diverse populations.
 Since 2013 SC CTSI Scholars and Trainees take a
short-course in Research in Diverse Populations.
 However, we were lacking experiential activities,
outside the academic setting.
Community Mentor
 In 2013 we pitched the idea to SC CTSI Community
Engagement
 Identify Scholars
 Align them with a Community Mentor
 Give t the new team, 1 year, to identify an opportunity
for the Scholar to present their research to an
appropriate community audience that would, in turn,
inform their research

Scholar
 Felt empowered and challenged by mentoring academic mentees
Summary
 We were able to the create appropriate logistics
to ensure the success of the program.
 All three Scholar Mentor teams met the
Program’s expectations and successfully
delivered at least one oral presentation about
their research.
 Both Scholars and Mentors were satisfied with
the program and evaluated the Program as
useful for their careers.
Impact
We believe that providing young physician-
scientists with the CMP experience can help
accelerate the translation of their research results
to the community and improve the health of
diverse and under-represented communities
throughout the LA country.
Next Steps
 Based on feedback the CMP will be scaled
up in subsequent years, eventually
becoming a requirement of the KL2
Program at the SC CTSI.
 We also plan to write a manual of
procedures of the program and share
across CTSA’s.

  • 12. Impact We believe that providing young physician- scientists with the CMP experience can help accelerate the translation of their research results to the community and improve the health of diverse and under-represented communities throughout the LA country.
  • 13. Next Steps  Based on feedback the CMP will be scaled up in subsequent years, eventually becoming a requirement of the KL2 Program at the SC CTSI.  We also plan to write a manual of procedures of the program and share across CTSA’s.
