The Road Not Taken Analysis: Interpreting Robert Frost's Famous Poem
1. The Road Not Taken
By Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
2. My Interpretation:
The speaker of the poem,a traveler , comes to a fork in the road and needs to have a choice
of which way is to be considered to be taken by him to continue his journey. Both ways are filled
with untrodden leaves. After having a debate with himself, the speaker chooses one with a hope that
he could return the next day to take the other way. Yet he knows it isn’t possible for him to do so.
This poem shows us the reality of life that sometimes we undergo tough choices which we
stand for when traveling the road of life.
Vocabulary:
Diverge – to proceed from a point in different directions
Undergrowth – shrubs
Just – right
Fair – reasonable
Trodden –set the foot on the ground
Wood – large collection of growing trees
Approach Used:
For me to better understand the poem, ”The Road Not Taken”, I preferred to use the
bottom-up approach wherein I started first to know the meanings of some of the vague words used
by Robert Frost. After understanding the meaning of the big words I encountered, I then started to
analyze each stanza that’s why I learned that in the 1st stanza, traveler arrived at a situation
wherein he has to choose which he prefers among the two diverging roads. In the 2nd stanza, the
traveler finally chooses the road to his journey. In the 3rd stanza, the traveler thinks that he could
ever come back to have the other road. In the last stanza, the traveler, the speaker of the poem
realizes the possibilities of the road not chosen behind.
