The trees sought a king to rule over them but the olive tree, fig tree, and vine all declined the role, not wanting to abandon their essence or harvests. Finally, the thornbush accepted and warned that it would provide shelter only to those who fully embraced it as king, while those who rejected it would witness their destruction in fire. The trees learned too late that by remaining passive in choosing a ruler, they allowed the malevolent thornbush to take power unfairly. The poem warns that virtue and good can only prevail if people courageously fight against evil.
