Nederland heeft een lange historie in halfgeleidertechnologie. Sinds de jaren vijftig maken we in Nederland producten gebaseerd op deze technologie, van chips voor computers tot lasers voor cd-spelers. Bekende Nederlandse bedrijven zoals Philips en ASM stonden aan de wieg van deze industrie. Inmiddels is de halfgeleiderindustrie ook inzet geworden van een internationale, economische strijd tussen wereldmachten Europa, VS en China. Maar niet alleen op dat vlak is de semiconductor industrie een hot topic. De explosieve toename van chips voor toepassing van AI tot autonoom rijden brengt ook de vraag naar boven: hoe zit het met het energieverbruik van al deze chips? Als we de huidige technologie exponentieel opschalen lopen we tegen de grenzen van de groei. Tijd voor een nieuw licht op innovatie?
