This document presents an emerging theory of professional adaptation for internationally educated social workers. It theorizes that adaptation is an interaction between external systems/structures and internal factors. External factors include socio-cultural similarities/differences between countries, similarities/differences in social work practices, experiences with licensure policies, workplace climate, proximity to discrimination, and networks. Internal factors include personal disposition, language proficiency, and capacity for reflective practice. Each external and internal factor exists on a continuum from protective to vulnerabilizing. Adaptation is a multidimensional, non-linear process influenced by interactions among these various factors. Reflective practice helps social workers make sense of their experiences in the new context.
