Westchester Community College was founded in 1946 as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in White
Plains. In 1957, the county of Westchester bought the 360-acre John Hartford estate in Valhalla and designated 218 acres for the
community. The college boasts approximately 12,000 full-time and part-time students. Add to that another 8,000 continuing
education students. Additionally, at least 98% of Westchester faculty members hold postgraduate degrees in their fields. The
student to faculty ratio is about 16:1.
