The Council of Nicaea and
Aryanism
Professor: Vera Dujaković Anđelija Stoilković
Dragana Kitanović
III6
I did not acknowledge Jesus
Christ for a God, because I
refused to accept the equality
between the Father and the
Son. Therefore, in the fourth
century Aryanism emerged, the
doctrine named after me.
Arius, a priest in Alexandria
My oponents established a
society that opposed my
teaching. This argument
threatened to split Christian
community.
Therefore, I had to step up. It
became so serious that I had to
summon the congregation of all
episcopes in Christian church.
Our task was to solve this dispute
and another one concerning the
date when the Eastern is to be
celebrated.
Emperor Constantine
the Great
The first Ecumenical council
Nicaea , the year 325 AD
On those
occasions
important
decisions on faith
and religion are
made…
The Ecumenical
councils are the
congregations
of episcopes.
The first
Ecumenical
council was held
in Nicaea on 20th
of May 325 AD.
...teaching,
order, discipline
and the way of
worshipping.
OMOUSIOS = of equal importance
•A great discussion was raised about the word
omousios which, according to
Arius's oponents, spoke that Christ was equal
to Father the Lord.
•Arius was expelled from the church society
and his teaching was proclaimed a heresy.
•Aryanism was not completely destroyed.
Disciples of Aryanism have just
temporarily retreated.
• On the council the issue on when the Eastern is to be
commemorated was solved.
•The whole Christian community was supposed to
celebrate Eastern on the same day.
•The Eastern is to be celebrated on the first week after
the full moon which comes after the beginning of the
Spring.
•Constantine addressed the participants in Latin,
and asked for peace and unity among all Christians.
•He wasn’t educated enough.
• He wasn’t well acquainted with Holy
Testimonies, and consequently he wasn’t able to
fully understand the dispute over Aryanism.
• He was a brilliant speaker and knew how to
patiently listen to the person he had conversation
with.
• He was content by the fact that during the council
at least an apparent unity within the Christian
church was established, which he was fighting for
eagerly.
