They’re all of varying personalities; there’s Kelly, the seemingly superficial girl who’s obsessed with her hair and fashion and Octavia who is above worldly things who’s more interested in meditation and Buddhism. Krissy who’s bubbly, loud and excitable yet Anna who’s reserved, bookish and shy – and Joanna, who oversees them all the mother hen of the group and helps them stick together. But what’s to stick together when there’s nobody left?
Something they can’t see is toying with them. They can’t see it, it’s too fast – they can’t hear it, but it moves. It’s sending them texts and orders, informing them that by entering these grounds they have unwittingly agreed to play ‘the game’ – and if they don’t, they soon find out that there are truly terrifying consequences...
OUTLINE:
,[object Object]
Middle: The girls play out of fear but one way or the other, they end up failing to complete their step and as a consequence one by one are killed (and caught on camera); brutal and slow.
End: Tavy is the final girl – at last feeling safe, believing that she has finally found the exit realises that she has actually come in a circle right back to the clearing in the beginning of the day where it all began – now, it’s her turn.SYNOPSIS:
EPPING FOREST, KENT (ENGLAND) - EASTER HOLIDAYS -2010
A group of five girls are excited to be leaving school, having completed their GCSEs and having the longest summer of their lives. Krissy Richards, Anna Thomas, Kelly James, Joanna Mathews and Octavia King are a group, and they always have been ever since Year 7 – but they’ll be splitting up in the new year so they’re celebrating the little time that they have together by having a camping trip. It’ll be them all together, just those five and they brought their camera too because they’re planning to make lots of new memories there together.
Kelly, who never takes anything seriously, is the first to feel that there’s something wrong. Sensing something watching her, she is uneasy and goes to make a call to her boyfriend – but she barely makes it a few steps within the trees before something comes quickly out of nowhere, too quick for her to see what, and slashes her arm. First blood is spilt and everybody is crowded around but nobody believes her when she tries to tell them that it wasn’t just a branch – there’s no way a branch could be that fast. Eventually she is persuaded that it must have been, and in the dark anyone could have made the mistake and after her wound is tied everybody’s attention is much more interested in trying to find Krissy’s camera that’s gone missing; at least until Kelly gets the text from an unknown number that’s about to change their lives.
Krissy’s annoyed because she thinks that Kelly’s just trying to bring back and be the centre of attention again, probably texted herself to do it. Wasn’t the blood enough? If only it were that simple. Kelly brightens up telling everyone that it looks like she’s going to be on a game show and starts to read them the text out loud until the last few words: You have entered the Mousetrap. Welcome to the game. Step One: Tell No One. It looks like she’s failed before it’s even really begun, and her friends tease her for it. She ignores them, embarrassed and storms off in the other direction but once again she doesn’t make it far. They watch, horrified, as from the darkness a noose appears and hooks over Kelly’s head tightening before dragging her off back into the darkness where it came from. For a moment they freeze due to the inhuman noises that a part of them recognizes as their friends before rushing over once again to try and save her.
This time, they’re too late. They find her strung up to a tree branch, hanging from it slowly in the stillness but she isn’t dead yet. They start holding her legs and trying to find a way to climb up the tree and find something sharp to cut her down with but there’s no time for that and instead they have to watch her die. Her choked gasps, her silent screaming as she pales beneath her powdered face, the blood vessels in her eyes bursting as she scrabbles at the rope around her neck but fails and you watch the light in her eyes fade as she dies.
A few seconds of shrill, tinny pop music sounds from the mobile beneath her feet in the grass – it’s hers, or was. The sound garish in light of what’s just happened, they don’t dare not check it and so with trembling fingers Anna is the one who picks it up and reads the next text aloud. Step Two: Do not break the rules.
Frightened, with no way to cut Kelly’s body down and wary sitting there like easy targets in the trees they return to their camp base as they argue over what to do next. They can’t stay here now, it’s clear that this camping trip is over but Anna’s mother has already driven away and isn’t coming back for another two days. London’s too far away and even if they managed to get a hold of her right now she could only make it back here by tomorrow. They’re going to have to wait it out, at least for the night; only four of them now, and with god knows what kind of person on the loose. Krissy wants to go so that they can cut Kelly down. They need to close her eyes, they should try to bury her, anything but just leave her hanging there like that, it would be the right thing to do but nobody wants to go back into those trees even if it is daylight.
Agitated, Anna accuses Krissy of having some kind of sick curiosity out of seeing her dead body and they bicker – till another text interrupts them. This time, it’s Krissy’s phone. Step Three: Go back to Kelly and take the fire extinguisher. A new round of argument starts. It knows their names, it has their numbers – Krissy shouldn’t go back there, that’s probably exactly what it wants. She points out that not following the rules and not playing the game was why Kelly got killed. This quietens them and scared, they go back together as the sky darkens, and it’s almost dusk.
As soon as Krissy picks up the fire extinguisher, she gets another text but this one is more cryptic: Step Four: Do not try to save her. Confused, none of them understands until suddenly gasoline is poured on Anna and crying out in surprise, she bursts into flame. A truly hellish image, she blindly stumbles around in pain and Krissy can’t bear it, and turns on the fire extinguisher. But something is wrong with the nozzle and its turned back on her, instead of water vapour its shooting out some kind of horrible acid and its burning her, boiling and bubbling her skin and she falls to the ground rolling around in pain as it eats up her skin corroding through within seconds as Octavia and Joanna watch in terror, clinging to one another in comfort.
Now there are two. The group have been whittled down so fast as if they were nothing, small, like pawns in a game – but then again that is exactly what they’re in, but in their case there have been no real instructions on how to win. Except for the obvious: do not break the rules. They have no choice except to play this twisted game, apart from the choice which is no choice at all because not to now is clear means you would only be choosing to die.
There are dead bodies all around and Joanna, normally the strong one who takes care of them all is sobbing helplessly into Octavia’s shoulder. She’s supposed to be the psychic, the smart one but it doesn’t take a medium to say that she has a very, very bad feeling about this. They’re losing daylight after all and she definitely doesn’t want to be here at night when it’s in complete darkness and they wouldn’t be able to find their way back to the tent. The two of them hug and Tavy tries to persuade Joanna to move away from there and get back but then there’s another text, and with a sinking heart she was going to ignore it but Jo nearly had a heart attack when she said that. She gave in and picked up her phone, and the next words chilled her – it was as if it could read her mind. Step Five: Do not ignore me. It must have heard her. It must be nearby – watching them. It glued them to the spot, making them afraid to turn anywhere and so that had the intended effect as they stayed in place for the next stage as this time Joanna was the one who got a text.
Step Six: Take out Anna’s eyes, and eat them. Shocked by the request, immediately Tavy advises her not to do it but tearful Joanna tells her that same feeling that feels so inevitable to her yet Tavy still fights against. I have no choice. Sickened, Tavy wants to try and stop her but who is she to stop Joanna playing? It would mean her death. She watches, doesn’t watch, and still can’t tear her eyes away as weeping Joanna crawls over to Anna’s burnt body and gouges what’s left of her eyes out. She squeezes it, paying no attention to the charred bits falling off and nibbled, chewing hard at the raw eye along with blood and ashes, forcing it down her throat, downing it.
Then she threw up. Endlessly it seemed, and what was worse was that she did it right over Anna’s burnt body and Krissy’s corroded one, while Kelly’s feet swung in the twilight overhead. Tavy would have gone forward to hold her hair back, just like old times as if they were only at a party but she was too busy trying not to be sick herself as she wondered when this savage game would end – then again, another text to Joanna and she leans over to read it over her shoulder. You cheated Step Six.
Tavy gasps and Joanna opens her mouth and starts screaming but not for very long. Out of the blue an axe comes flying and embeds itself into her neck, causing her to collapse. A leather gloved hand follows it and Octavia shuts her eyes, turning her back and shaking, crying hard but quietly. She opens her eyes and stares at the cold ground that’s now crimson with blood and refuses to watch behind her. The audience can only see out of the corner of her eye – glimpses of a tall, dark silhouette and the horrible sounds of hack, hack, hacking away. She is waiting to die, expecting it at any moment when the killer is done but then the noise subsides – and Joanna’s head rolls to her side. She leaps up screaming and runs, hearing another text message and the last thing she wants to do is look but she finally accepts what Joanna said only minutes before: She has no choice.
She stops and leans against a tree far from the scene, night has fallen entirely and she reads her final instructions under the moon and the dying light of her phone which she forgot to charge fully. Step Seven: Find Krissy’s camera. Of all the menial tasks...after Step Six this is almost something of a disappointment though she cannot deny it is a relief not to be asked to eat a part of her friends, to go back. She stays on the path, making her way back to camp but also searching because of all things she does not want to fail. All the others failed, but if she can pass this then maybe just maybe she can win this twisted game and win (although she can’t even begin to think of how she is going to be able to try and explain this all tomorrow to Anna’s mother). She is living now in seconds. Every moment is precious.
She goes back to camp to look for it there and there it is! Triumphant, she notices it’s connected to something – a projector. It wasn’t there earlier but now the light is blinking, projecting a blank screen up onto the fabric of their tent and she hears her phone receive another text. She never wants to receive another text the rest of her life. Breathing hard, she reads: Step Eight: Turn on the camera and watch. Everything. This is your final step. Why was he going easy on her? Shivering, Octavia turns on the camera and this is the hardest thing she has ever done in her life to keep on watching. There they are, all of them alive again only hours before together and this is when she begins to understand that he had been there from the very beginning, not only watching but filming them all – he has been making a snuff film out of them. She watches, as the masked man in shadows drags Kelly and they run and he strings her up to die. She relives it all, as they argue and go back for her and Anna and then Krissy become victims, then poor Joanna whose spirit had been broken by then to the point where she would have done anything he had asked but her body betrayed her, and a killer like him had no mercy. She forced her eyes to stay open as he got rid of her, too, every single second keeping in mind that if she just got to the end of this she could win. She could get out, she could leave, she could live.
More fool her. He finishes with the axe and looks up at the camera, right at her and she shudders; but this is the end of it. Surely the tapes have run out by now? Yet the camera is still running but this time it’s live; and now, she’s only watching herself.
She looks up in horror and this is when it hits her, staring at herself wide eyed and messed up on the projection even as another text arrives. Congratulations. You have finished the game! And for the winner, there's only the best. They get to steal the final scene - I hope you enjoy my grand finale.
Because you will be my masterpiece.
SCOPE OF FILM
,[object Object]
Creates an uneasy suspense for the audience as the game is played, to wonder who will be next to die and who will live, and a sense of horror at the extravagance of brutality with which each girl is killed.
Portrays a sense of irony in the black humour of the last girl Tavy who thought she’d got away only running back to the story’s beginning, and the story comes full circle.LENGTH, DISTRIBUTION & MEDIA
,[object Object]

The most important thing to Krissy is her best friend Anna who goes everywhere with her - the two are absolutely inseparable. She is also very close to Octavia who she feels very protective over. Krissy lives for the moment and does as she pleases, trying daring things each day. She’s the most excitable of the group and will often make something out of nothing just to liven things up.Krissy is brave, and she has a strong sense of honour so when Kelly is hung she insists even before the third step to go back to her so they could do right by her somehow. She fails her step because it goes against the very basis of who she is as a person, not to save someone, especially her best friends and so she is punished for it.Anna ThomasAnna is also 15 years old (youngest) is the unlikely best friend of Krissy. Anna is timid; she used to get bullied a lot in her previous school hence the bashful side of her. She never thinks anything risky is a good idea as it could be dangerous and is very conservative, particularly in comparison to Krissy. She comes out of her shell a bit whilst with her friends but there is always that quiet side to her.Anna is quiet, so much that even she gets more or less ignored by the killer because she does not get her own step, and instead if used as a tool to play with Krissy’s emotions as she is set on fire but isn’t meant to be saved.Kelly JamesKelly is a fashion conscious teenager who is the eldest out of the group at 16. Her obsession with models overtakes her care for her school work and attitude. All she’s concerned with is getting her hair and makeup right for the day. She enjoys spending most time with Octavia as she likes her dress sense, though of course she spends more time with her reflection. Kelly is the first kill – she is the first to sense that anything is wrong, even before Tavy and she sets the tone for the rest of the film as she fails the simple first step, thus setting an example to the others. Joanna MathewsJoanna (15) is the mother figure of the group. She makes sure everybody does what they’re meant to and takes authority. She is usually listened to but occasionally gets ignored by the girls who mistake her care for them as bossiness.Joanna always tries to look after everyone, but her strength is only a front; she’s fragile underneath and her greatest weakness is how much she cares about her friends. Seeing three of her friends die in front of her broke her spirits to the point where she would have done anything the game said to stay alive, but unfortunately she doesn’t get the chance.Octavia King Octavia (newly 16, aka ‘Tavy’) is the strangest out of the group. She enjoys weird and wonderful things and aspires to become a medium. Her friends love her sense of things going wrong as they all use it to keep out of trouble - but can she predict it all?Tavy is the only one who manages to follow her steps, and she is the Final Girl. She is the quietest, and unlike the others she only gasps quietly when they’re sobbing and screaming. She is one of those who argue the most against following the game and its rules because it goes against her beliefs and offends her morals but in the end even she gives in, and she wins the game.
